Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Hopalong & Second Chance Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to eliminate the euthanasia of adoptable animals throughout Northern California. Since our founding in 1993, we have collectively saved over 24,000 animals, placing them in loving, permanent homes. We also provide spay/neuter services, animal advocacy and humane education in schools and in after school programs, and community outreach on the benefits of spay/neutering and the critical need for animal adoption.
From our office in the East Bay, CA, hundreds of volunteers and a small staff work tirelessly with shelters to rescue animals at risk of euthanasia. We take a multifaceted approach to finding permanent, stable and loving homes for our rescued friends: they are fostered in a home environment, evaluated for temperament, and many receive basic training to make them better companions for the people who will ultimately take them home.
