Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?

Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

The organization was established in 1984 as a not-for-profit shelter under the name of Live Oak/Suwannee County Humane Society, for the first ten years volunteers worked out of their homes. In 1996 we acquired our first shelter building on North Houston Street, Live Oak. As the shelter expanded and needed more space to house the many homeless animals we purchased affordable property in Lee and renovated an old greyhound site in April of 2002 and opened our doors at the present shelter on July 16, 2002. As we are currently servicing five counties: Suwannee, Hamilton, Lafayette, Madison, and Columbia, we changed our name to Suwannee Valley Humane Society in July of 2002. We are privately funded through donations, on-site thrift stores, nursery plant sales, and fund raising events. All are welcome to visit during regular hours to view the new shelter and its potential for growth, our healthy adorable animals, their comfortable shelter home and their general well being.

  • Hi. I am in search of someone in your area to help a young female all black cat that is residing at the I-10\ west bound rest stop at MM 265. She apparently recently had a litter but appears to be dry now. She is somewhat friendly, will come up to you looking for food, but skittish. She appears to be in pretty good health, eyes, nose ears are clear, coat is shiney, she is not boney, and I really did not see evidence of flea infestation. The guard said she has been there forever, there was another cat, possibly her mother, that he no longer sees. We did not have a pet carrier, but did attempt to rescue her, that was not going to happen. She was too skittish. We did feed her and left some food altho the guard stated they are not allowed to feed her or any cat. I'm hoping someone can rescue her. Having a lot of experience with cats, I feel that given some socialization, she could be a good pet. Also, someone needs to contact me. I have info concerning an organization out of south Fl that aids shelters with food and supplies. Here in Panama City, we have just received our first 7 crates of supplies. The lady running the organization is activly looking for shelters to help. It is called the Pet Project, free, and my info is Suwanee has a very limited support from your county.
