Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…

Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?

Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

The Humane Society of the Nature Coast, Inc. is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to the rescue, health and re-homing of orphaned and abandoned pets. We work diligently to locate and work with specialized rescue groups from ferret rescue to wildlife organizations.

In November 1964, the Humane Society of Brooksville, Inc. was founded in Hernando County, Florida. The name was changed in 1985 to The Humane Society of Hernando County, Inc. Due to the ever-expanding area that the Humane Society now services, in 2004, we changed our name to The Humane Society of the Nature Coast, Inc.

The land we occupy was part of a bequeathed estate for the pets of Hernando County for as long as the land is utilized as a pet rescue or sanctuary. We purchased an additional acre of land located on the north border of the property which will allow for expansion.

  • I've been trying to help my parents with a feral/stray cat issue where they live & I must say I can understand why there continues to be a horrific problem with feral/stray cats in this county!!! Not only due to lack of spay/neutering, but also because when elder folks pass away. Then these cats continue to breed, if they survive in the wild, & Hernando County considers TNR unlawful...how AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I called the number that I was given, for Animal Services...turns out it was the Animal Shelter number & SUE, someone working there/volunteering there, was QUITE RUDE!!!! I was given the number for the sheriffs office, to alert animal control. Are they a No Kill Shelter??? I don't know, as SUE couldn't be bothered to be of ANY HELP to me & my parents. I'm very disheartened with the lack of a good system to be of any help to these creatures. They didn't create this situation. I will say, I spoke with Gail, at Nature Coast Humane Society & SPCA, and also to Fran, from Pet Luv, & they both were kind & tried to be of help to my parents & I. Thank you, Ladies!!!
