Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Adoptable Pets in Illinois

Formed in 2002, Helping Strays mission is to rescue, shelter, and rehabilitate homeless pets, find them loving homes, and promote responsible pet ownership.
Helping Strays has great pets of all sizes, ages and personalities. We get to know our pets through our Shelter Buddy program, volunteer involvement, and fostering so we can guide you to your ideal match. We can also provide testing with other animals to ensure your new family member will fit in with any existing animals in the home.
Every animal adopted from Helping Strays is spayed or neutered before it goes to its new home. Preventative health care is important, so all our pets are up-to-date on their vaccines, have been checked for intestinal parasites, and treated if necessary. Every animal is microchipped for identification purposes.
In addition to routine vaccinations, altering, microchipping, our cats have tested negative for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Adult dogs have tested negative for heartworms. All of our animals are on flea preventative and the dogs and puppies are on heartworm preventative.
Helping Strays has our Foster to Adopt program available to every potential adopter. This program allows you to welcome the pet into your home for a two week “trial basis” to make sure the new pet is a good fit with you, other pets in the home, and your lifestyle. Helping Strays will provide all equipment, food, and medical needs during this period.
We want you and your new pet to succeed in every way and will do what we can to make that happen. Support and information are available before, during, and after your adoption from Helping Strays experienced team. In addition, Helping Strays works with local dog trainers that are available for follow up advice once you adopt your new puppy or dog.
