Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

At the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark we are passionate about ensuring the protection and welfare of all animals in need. This passion is the Mission of our service and the legacy that was left to us by our founder Robert Kleinstuber. Robert began the shelter in 1959 as a memorial to his beloved dog, Jeff. His hard work paved the way for the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark. This spirit is what drives us each day to do the best we can for the good of all animals. We currently contract with 10 municipalities in Orange & Sullivan Counties as their dog control impound facility, however, we extend our intake services on a case-by-case basis when space is available throughout the tri-state area. If you find a stray animal please contact your local animal control officer and/or police department first before contacting the shelter. This will ensure the animal receives attention as quickly as possible. Our dedicated staff will work with pet owners who must surrender their pets, however, we may not be able to take the animal right away because we do not euthanize animals at the shelter simply to make room for others. Those needing assistance should contact the shelter to schedule a time when we can best accommodate you and your pet. The Humane Society provides so much more than just food and shelter. Our animals receive medical treatment, socialization, behavior training, enrichment, exercise, and lots of love. We strive to match our animals with adopters based on a wide-range of criteria to ensure it is a good fit for both. At the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark, we offer homeless animals a second chance at a first-rate life.
