Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Adoptable Pets in Alabama
(report broken link)
Save Our Strays (S.O.S.) Animal Shelter was founded in 1981 to rescue, shelter and adopt neglected, abused and homeless dogs and cats in the city and local counties. In 1987, six years later, the shelter was constructed with many hours of hard work by dedicated volunteers and contributions from caring individuals and businesses.
OUR COMMITMENT
...is to maintain a no-kill shelter, and to end the tragedy of pet overpopulation. To date we have rescued, rehabilitated, spayed, neutered, and adopted out over 3,000 pets. Regretfully, we turn many animals away because our current facilities are too small and understaffed. We are still struggling against the barren backdrop of skeleton funding and minimal volunteer interest, however we persevere with our mission of compassionate care. This is no small mission either, because on any given day there is an average of 100 dogs and cats waiting for another chance.
