Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Vernon Township Animal Control enforces all state and local regulations related to the animal population in the township. It is responsible for enforcement of animal ordinances, rabies control, capture of sick or injured animals, confinement of lost pets, quarantines, dog bites and adoptions. It also maintains the animal shelter, issues dog licenses and holds rabies clinics. Personnel are on twenty-four hour emergency call through the Vernon Township Police Department for animal bites, injured, sick or stray animals, as well as bats found within the living area of the house.
