Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Adoptable Pets in Kansas
(report broken link)
The Jefferson County Humane Society was formed in 1998 by a group of citizens concerned about abandoned and stray animals in Jefferson County, KS. On January 2, 2006, JCHS opened a shelter in Valley Falls. The building was a former veterinary clinic and we keep it licensed as a shelter and a veterinary clinic.
Jefferson County Humane Society is a no-kill shelter. We only euthanize an animal if it is medically necessary or aggressive and we are not able to make the animal adoptable. We have had a consistent positive outcome (adoptions and return to owners) greater than 90%.
In the past few years, we have added cat rooms and puppy rooms. In December, 2010 we bought the facility with six acres. We are currently building large play yards to allow our dogs to be outside as much as possible with each other.
