Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?

Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

The San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society is a nonprofit (501c3) with a mission to improve the well being of animals (primarily dogs & cats) in the San Luis Valley (SLV).

The SLV is the largest alpine valley in the world (larger than the size of Massachusetts). Our location is at 9,000 feet altitude in the poorest county in Colorado, Costilla County. We have active spay/neuter programs. We have rescued and found loving homes for over 11,000 homeless, often suffering dogs and cats in the past 25 years. 15 dog parks and runs keep our dogs busy during the day, weather permitting. Dogs are kept in kennels only at night. We have contracts with Costilla County and LaJara to take in stray dogs.

We are a no-kill shelter/sanctuary and the largest animal welfare facility in the SLV.

  • Many thanks for the tremendous work you do for animals. Today I was at the Pet smart in Colorado springs and you had brought a few of your dogs there. I became smitten with a pit bull named Spice. What a beautifuland loving girl. We have 2rescue vats and have just moved here from Maryland. When its time we will certainly my give you a call or come visit. I hope someone reads this post and goes to your shelter to adopt. Thank you again for the unending compassion and work you do for those who can't speak for themselves.
