Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

I adopted a dog from the humane society on 4/17/15 and did not know that the dog has tested positive for heart worms until the day I was ready to bring her home:( Now I have to spend about a thousand dollars to put her through X-rays, blood work, and heart worm treatments to get her feeling better. I wish they would have had a vet test her for heart worms the day that she was put into the shelter and not a week and a half later when in ready to take her home. Also the dog reeked of poo smell and stunk up my truck and she was put under to be spayed and she was already spayed so she was cut open again for nothing. The people were very friendly and the place appeared clean but I'm just upset about the heart worm results and wish they knew sooner so that I had a choice of changing my mind about her or not
