Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

I am new to Slidell so I'm not sure who to contact but my neighbors have a cat that is now on its 2nd litter of kittens and they have made it clear that they don't want them. They gave me permission to find them a home and/or a shelter to take them before they end up dropping them off on the side of the road. Who do I call that will take them because I can't catch them they are like wild cats and extremely fast.
Called about rehoming my dog and was met with the judgement that I “Obviously” didn’t want to “put in the work” to correct the behavior of my dog! My dog has bitten my child and now we can’t trust him. I know he’s sweet and I don’t want to see him put down I just think he needs to be in a home without small children, Had I known attempting to find a loving home with no-children was going to come with a side of judgement and a heaping entree of unsolicited advice I would’ve just called animal control! Sometimes things don’t work out and people should be meant with empathy. It’s a hard decision, one I had a tough time making because I’m attached to my dog but I have to think of my child! If this is how people seeking help are treated NO WONDER animal rescues are under funded, I wouldn’t give a dime to this organization. And maybe if you want to give people advice have a Vet who has studied animals pick up the phone instead of a Karen eager to have something to be high and mighty about!
