Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

The Humane Society is an organization dedicated to helping animals in Muhlenberg County live full and happy lives. Our team works seven days a week to provide safe and loving homes pets. Every furbaby that comes through our door deserves to be loved, and we care for them until they find their forever home.

We offer a number of services to the community and its animals. We also offer microchipping for the public, helping the community keep track of their babies. We work with Maple Manor Health Care Center to provide a bi-weekly pet therapy day, sharing the joy of our animals with those who can’t care for them personally.

  • As of Nov. 2024 they are only open for adoptions on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. And it is impossible to adopt from them. I've been trying for THREE weeks (jumping through every hoop) - is PETA running this place now? Kinda seems that way. Or do they get paid by the animal they hold? Who knows? What I do know is that whoever's in charge here doesn't seem to care about adopting the animals out these days, which explains why they can never take in new animals anymore. Anyway you always hear "adopt don't stop" but this place is now a perfect example of why one must shop. The truly sad thing is one of the cats I was going to adopt was a senior cat and now because they refuse to adopt animals out that poor baby will spend what's left of his life in that prison. Honestly they need to be investigated as to why they refuse to adopt animals out anymore because over the years I've adopted at least FOUR animals from them, but now they apparently no longer do that.
