Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is a 501(c) 3 (nonprofit) organization run almost exclusively by dedicated volunteers.
We are implementing innovative and progressive programs in Austin and Central Texas after studying the best practices of other cities who are no-kill or are in the process of becoming no-kill.

Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

I am inquiring about my eight cats. Two weeks ago I tested positive for Covid19. Last week I was struggling to breath and felt like needed help with taking care of my cats. My son's grandmother loves animals and I felt like she could help me make sure they were cared for during this time of illness. I was not aware they were going to be brought and placed somewhere for adoption. Leaving me unable to ever see my cats again. She has chosen to not give me any information about the location of my cats. My cats did not have their shots but there are no cats better loved and cared for. Please if you had 8 cats come in either late on Feb 28 or early Feb 29. The info i have is my cats were picked up at Bucees in Baytown and it was a 4 to 5 hour drive to the place my cats would be delivered to. Their names are Puma, Bippady BB, Lil Daddy, Baby and 3 kittens. (One blind) Please I would love to have them back. I will pay for any fees or services given. I am desperately seeking my cats. Thank you for your time. The name of the person surrendering cats would be Janet King Bunyon
