Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

Hello. I have a neighbor who has been feeding stray cats without spaying and neutering them and they have multiplied and she has called animal control to take them away. She is currently on a waiting list. Our local shelter is not a no-kill and they only keep animals for about 5 days. There are so many and they may be considered "feral" by them and we fear due to that and/or lack of room, they might be immediately destroyed. Do you know of any shelters or fosters that might take at least some of the cats and kittens? Failing that, do you know of any established feral colonies they could be imtroduced to? We are in York County but willing to travel and we know someone who can help us with trapping and transportation. I would appreciate any info or advice you could give. You can contact me at:
