Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

I’m reaching out on behalf of our ten- dog-kennel, very rural Mountain City (TN) Animal Control, situated in a county with no animal control at all.
Our wonderful Animal Control Officer Mandy Neylon has received some very difficult personal health news about a chronic condition, and she needs to place the current ten dogs (and several cats and kittens) immediately.
She is afraid that otherwise our town govt will want her to do the unthinkable in short order, as the town insurance policy allows for no volunteers to pitch in to help with animal care. And there are many of us who have offered to no avail.
I realize there is no good time to ask a rescue to take on a dog or cat or kitten, but our situation is extreme and your reputation has preceded you, even down as far as our neck of the woods!
We are able to fully transport, and have donors to cover your cost of vetting and spay or neuter.
You are very welcome to share this with those in your circle.
Any questions or advice are also very welcome to me at this email, or Officer Neylon at 423-727-7880. (Below is a link to our local article about her.)
Thank you so much for all you do and for any consideration!
Sincerely,
Peggy Hamilton
