Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

The Darke County Animal Shelter is recognized by the “Best Friends Animal Society” as a “No Kill Shelter”
Our Mission Statement
To provide humane dog-control and care. To ensure safety and welfare of people and animals through professional law enforcement and community relations. To provide the best possible chance of rehabilitation and re-homing of abandoned dogs as well as reuniting lost dogs with their owners.
Shelter Services
Provide enforcement of the Ohio Revised Code 9.55 dealing with dogs.
Provide dogs for adoption.
Provide public education in regards to companion animals.
Provide a suitable place for impounded dogs, making proper provisions for feeding and caring for them.
Provide an avenue for dog owners to relinquish unwanted dogs.
Patrol and humanely seize and impound dogs found running at large.
Investigate livestock deaths caused by dogs or coyote.
Accept owner surrendered dogs.
Make a weekly report to the County Commissioners.
Provide emergency services where a true emergency exists.
We are here for owners of lost dogs to claim their animals. We post lost dog information for 2 weeks in house.
We try to reunite stray dogs with their owners.
We provide immediate notification to dog owner if dog is wearing current year tag.
