Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

We are a no kill shelter located at the site of the famous Ridotto Ballroom at Highway 4 and 450th Street (C26) in Havelock.
Mission
The Safe Haven Animal Shelter of Northwest Iowa is dedicated to providing a safe and loving environment to animals who are lost, abandoned, hurt or unwanted, without the possibility of euthanasia for space, convenience or length of stay while they wait for their forever home.
History
Safe Haven Animal Shelter of NW Iowa, formerly Pocahontas County Humane Society, was created in May 2010. In October 2010, we opened the Wags N Whiskers thrift shop in downtown Pocahontas to raise funds for the Non-Profit organization. The thrift shop also housed the organization offices. Due to overwhelming need in the community, we eventually split the space in half, with Wags N Whiskers in the front half of the building and the shelter in the back.
In September 2012, we acquired the building on Ridotto Corner in Havelock, which provided the space the shelter needed. We also changed our name. We are forever grateful to the seller, who donated a portion of the cost of the property, and to those who donated and loaned the rest of the funds needed.
