Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?

No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

My parents starting having stray cats show up at their house around 2012. We were all taught to to be kind and gentle to animals. I myself have helped several Momma cats deliver kittens because after the fifth one she was tired or maybe one Momma was not sure what to do.. But now my parents are 79 and 75 ... one diagnosed with stage 4 cancer ..no cure - and Parkinson's and dementia..we have had to relocate them to a more comfortable living situation and are caring for them every day ..morning noon and night .. we have contacted local animal entities with no help in sight.. we as their children have are hands full with the animals we have and need to relocate these cats to comfortable living situations. There are at least 20 to 30 cats ..and of course living on a fixed income they were unable to have them fixed..I myself have went into debt fixing cats ..trying to save cats from tick fever..some mine some strays.. My family needs help with this situation and we do not no where to turn..If anyone at all has any solutions please email me at [email protected]

Hello, I have a 2 year old black and white long haired female stray who has started to stay around our house. She is pregnant but I did take her and had her spayed. She is a sweet gentle cat, we already have a territorial male and don’t have room for the cat and her kittens. We would consider taking the mother cat after her kittens have been weaned, if she can’t find a home. We can’t take the kittens.

I am moving in 3 months and I am now unable to keep my 3 cats any longer. They are wonderful cats, we moved here from Colorado, lived 8k on a mountain so they know a quite life and are indoor/outdoor cats, mainly indoor. 2 are gray, males and 1 is black. All are 6 years old and know commands. Very quiet, well behaved, are afraid of dogs but love to be rubbed, chew chews and their space. I just can no longer care due to cancer but love them very much. If you can help me please contact me @ my email [email protected]. Thank you

I found a male lab mix (white with tan markings) running down Rushfork Road yesterday morning dragging a leash and a rope. I opened my door to the car and he jumped in the back seat like he owned the place. He's at my home now but we are heading out of town this weekend so I need to find a place for him. He's super sweet and gentle, looks well taken care of but not neutered. I've posted signs, called vets, etc but no luck finding the owner as of yet. Please help. I'm Diana Smith at 617-1919.

This winter 2017-18 I fed a gorgeous long-haired black and white medium-sized cat. Turns out he is a neutered male stray. He was living under a house which was slated to be burned. I made a place for him under some lumber in my back yard and nursed him through the terrible cold and floods. Really became endeared, well-natured. But I have two cats in my small house, one a male. One week ago, I tried to place the stray in a carry case on my back porch to take to the vet. (to be slayed -- before I knew he was neutered). He got away but squalled a bit. I was very anxious too. My male cat became very aggressive toward me. This morning I trapped the stray in a live trap and took him to a spay clinic only to find out that he is a neutered male. Well, I brought him back still sedated. I was terribly anxious, caring much for the kitty. But again my boy cat came unglued, frightfully aggressive and violent toward me. I can't mess with the cat outside any longer. But the whole thing breaks my heart. (Not that I have not trapped many cats and dealt with them in various ways.) On top of this, he has a friend which comes at night, a brindled female, I think. She too is sweet, with pale blue eyes. The male would be good indoors or outdoors in a good setting; the girl probably outdoors, since she is sweet but pretty feral. If anyone can help, please do. For months now, through the winter, I have fretted and worried about this cats. But the situation has become unmanageable. I seriously need help, and the local shelter won't take feral cats. 1. Feral Cat TNR Program

Many communities are embracing Trap, Neuter, Release programs (TNR) to improve animal welfare, reduce death rates, and meet obligations to public welfare.

2. High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

Low cost, high volume spay/neuter will quickly lead to fewer animals entering the shelter system, allowing more resources to be allocated toward saving lives.

3. Rescue Groups

An adoption or transfer to a rescue group frees up scarce cage and kennel space, reduces expenses for feeding, cleaning, killing, and improves a community's rate of lifesaving. In an environment of millions of dogs and cats killed in shelters annually, rare is the circumstance in which a rescue group should be denied an animal.

4. Foster Care

Volunteer foster care is crucial to No Kill. Without it, saving lives is compromised. It is a low cost, and often no cost, way of increasing a shelter's capacity, improving public relations, increasing a shelter's public image, rehabilitating sick and injured or behaviorally challenged animals, and saving lives.

5. Comprehensive Adoption Programs

Adoptions are vital to an agency's lifesaving mission. The quantity and quality of shelter adoptions is in shelter management's hands, making lifesaving a direct function of shelter policies and practice. In fact, studies show people get their animals from shelters only 20% of the time. If shelters better promoted their animals and had adoption programs responsive to the needs of the community, including public access hours for working people, offsite adoptions, adoption incentives, and effective marketing, they could increase the number of homes available and replace killing with adoptions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, shelters can adopt their way out of killing.

6. Pet Retention

While some of the reasons animals are surrendered to shelters are unavoidable, others can be prevented-but only if shelters are willing to work with people to help them solve their problems. Saving animals requires communities to develop innovative strategies for keeping people and their companion animals together. And the more a community sees its shelters as a place to turn for advice and assistance, the easier this job will be.

7. Medical and Behavior Programs

In order to meet its commitment to a lifesaving guarantee for all savable animals, shelters need to keep animals happy and healthy and keep animals moving through the system. To do this, shelters must put in place comprehensive vaccination, handling, cleaning, socialization, and care policies before animals get sick and rehabilitative efforts for those who come in sick, injured, unweaned, or traumatized.

8. Public Relations/Community Involvement

Increasing adoptions, maximizing donations, recruiting volunteers and partnering with community agencies comes down to one thing: increasing the shelter's exposure. And that means consistent marketing and public relations. Public relations and marketing are the foundation of all a shelter's activities and their success. To do all these things well, the shelter must be in the public eye.

9. Volunteers

Volunteers are a dedicated "army of compassion" and the backbone of a successful No Kill effort. There is never enough staff, never enough dollars to hire more staff, and always more needs than paid human resources. That is where volunteers come in and make the difference between success and failure and, for the animals, life and death.

10. Proactive Redemptions

One of the most overlooked areas for reducing killing in animal control shelters are lost animal reclaims. Sadly, besides having pet owners fill out a lost pet report, very little effort is made in this area of shelter operations. This is unfortunate because doing so-primarily shifting from passive to a more proactive approach-has proven to have a significant impact on lifesaving and allow shelters to return a large percentage of lost animals to their families.

11. A Compassionate Director

The final element of the No Kill equation is the most important of all, without which all other elements are thwarted-a hard working, compassionate animal control or shelter director not content to regurgitate tired cliches or hide behind the myth of "too many animals, not enough homes." Unfortunately, this one is also oftentimes the hardest one to demand and find.
