Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Who we are
Almost Home Rescue (AHR) is a non profit dog rescue serving Rhode Island. All donations are tax deductible. AHR is comprised of a small, yet dedicated group of volunteers who devote their free time to rescuing, rehabilitating-if necessary- and rehoming dogs in need.
Our dogs come from various local shelters and in some cases are owner surrendered due to a variety of circumstances like divorce, moving or death, as well as a whole list of lame excuses.
We do not maintain a shelter so all of our dogs live in foster care until they can be placed in the right home. We can only take in as many dogs as we have an open home for, and therefore we welcome new foster applicants so we can help place more dogs who are in jeopardy of losing their lives.
We do not discriminate against dogs because of age or breed. When deciding what dogs we will accept into our program, we judge by dogs' temperaments, not by how they look. We do not take or rehome dogs displaying human aggression.
What we do
We take dogs out of the shelter who need that little extra.. time to decompress, time to adjust, time to trust again.
More often than not, we have found dogs that don't present well in their kennels, make a complete turnaround in a home environment. While in foster care, we can give you a better idea of a dog's likes and dislikes while we work on basic training and address any undesirable behaviors. They are Almost Home!
What else?
AHR gives back to Rhode Island! In addition to financing spay and neuter surgeries for privately owned dogs (dogs who are considered high risk or were adopted from a shelter), we donate to necessary medical expenses and emergency services for dogs in need and provide food and supplies to dog owners who are experiencing financial difficulty.
