Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…

Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?

Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Adoptable Pets in New Jersey

last checked 10/29/26

The Homeless Animal Adoption League (HAAL) was originally formed as the East Orange Animal League in 1989 by citizens concerned about conditions in the East Orange Pound.

The league was incorporated as the Homeless Animal Adoption League in 1995. When the East Orange pound closed, the league set up temporary residence in Bloomfield to find homes for the remaining East Orange cats. That temporary residence had become a home for homeless, abandoned, and abused cats for the past 17+ years.

As of January 2018 we officially closed our Bloomfield location and opened our Clifton location.
