Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

In 1822 the first laws to protect animals had been passed in the UK and the first SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was formed two years later in London. Not only was the SPCA the first animal welfare agency in the world, it was also the first law enforcement agency in the UK. The police force was formed in 1826.
When the early settlers from England came to New Zealand, they brought English laws with them, including the Protection of Animals Act 1835. Canterbury opened the first SPCA in New Zealand in 1872.
