Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Adoptable Pets in Puerto Rico

Pets Alive Puerto Rico was born from Manos Por Patas, a rescue group working in the Yabucoa area and focusing its efforts on ‘Dead Dog Beach’ - nicknamed that by the locals. Dogs are dumped at Dead Dog Beach by people who are unwilling or unable to care for them any longer. Left to fend for themselves, the dogs become sick and emaciated. Sadly, they are sometimes subjected to further suffering at the hands of abusers. As the name implies, many dogs die here.
Dead Dog Beach exists in a commonwealth of the United States, in a tourist paradise that hides a horrific secret. There are approximately 250,000 stray dogs on the island of Puerto Rico, which is about the size of Connecticut. Yet there are only 5 municipal shelters to care for them. The kill rate at these shelters is 99%. A dog turned into one of these shelters is not likely to survive more than 48 hours.
