Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

The process for adoption is very lengthy and rigorous, and rightfully so. The volunteers certainly care about these animals going to the right home. However, I have had a terrible customer service experience with NNK. I applied to adopt one dog in particular. I had a volunteer call me to talk about the process. I was the first application sent in for this dog and I was told that my application would be reviewed first. Not long after, I got a call from the same volunteer who yelled at me because my old vet and reccommendors did not return her call within 12 hours. At this time she started calling me by the wrong name, despite correcting her multiple times. Furthermore, I was told that I could only meet the dog when I came to pick her up. She didnt understand that I wanted to meet the dog before I adopted her (you don't adopt just from a picture!!). At the end of all of this, she told me that she ALREADY GAVE THE DOG TO ANOTHER FAMILY. Terrible customer service. I I won't be seeking a companion through them.
