The story of "Portia" in Ohio

THANK YOU everyone for being on a continual lookout and all your prayers! Portia is home with her human/owner and her dog bros Ollie & Jack after 11, almost 12, DAYS by herself. The story about her is truly a miracle. The day she went missing her owner was in their closed off carport with all 3 of her dogs, cleaning poop off the carport floor. Unknown to her owner, she went under the trailer from one place the skirt had been pulled back to get to the hot water tank. When Portia was noticed missing after clean up, neither of the two remaining dogs ever barked or followed her. Her brother, Jack, is the would be escape artist. He is smaller than her and fast, yet he was still in the yard. Her owner saw the open panel she left. She thought maybe Portia tried to shove under there. She took off another three panels so one on each side was open. No Portia. She used flashlights and another person to help look - no Portia to be seen. She looked under there for three more days in addition to searching everywhere nearby. Even a grandma and the 15 kids she brought on bikes searched high and low in the area. Her owner knocked on every door nearby and up to a half a mile away. People she spoke with were also willing to be on continual lookout for her and some even prayed with her right at their door. (Everyone has been amazing). After days of searching, after getting the support of even more people on multiple sites online to watch for her, Portia’s owner was at the end of things. There was nothing else she could do possibly do - after days and long hours searching for Portia by herself and with others, after many tears and much prayer, she left it up to God. There was nothing more she could really do at a week or so since Portia went missing but to trust God, and if it was His Will, she would come home. It was an extremely difficult time. On the 11th day, just a little over a day ago, her owner thought she heard some of Portia’s yips. She wasn’t sure if she was imagining. Her Great Dane, Ollie, started sniffing near the area of the hot water heater where she heard the sound. Renewed with hope, her owner raced near the area to listen again, first from outside, and then from the bathroom on the inside. She first called the fire station, but they wouldn’t come because it wasn’t a person. She called her park’s management for help. They sent 3 guys out. The area under her trailer was small and neither Portia’s owner or the 3 men could fit far enough under the trailer. Then, one of the workers remembered the new guy who just started that day, he could probably fit. The new guy was around 5’5” and a thin 130 lb wet. He came and was able to get under all the way under the trailer. He could hear Portia and wiggled further under the trailer and further into mud and rainwater. He yelled back from one worker that yelled back to the next until her owner heard that Portia was indeed alive and in a 2 foot hole. He initially grabbed her “arm,” trying to get her out without hurting her. Finally - he pulled her out! They all helped to get Portia and the new guy out from under the trailer. Portia’s owner and quite frankly myself thought she would be in rough shape. Other than some mud on her, Portia was COMPLETELY unharmed! Turned out she did now weigh only 30 lb, having gone in the hole at her regular 45 lb. But even then she did not look unhealthy after coming out of the hole. It was AMAZING! We cried with joy.😀 While the man was getting Portia out, Portia’s owner asked one of the other workers as to why is there a 2 ft hole under there to begin with? She hadn’t been aware of it, nor could it readily be seen. Having been 40 years at his job, he knew those openings were for the overflow of rainwate, or for if the water pipe broke. The water goes into a clay cisterns/catch basins underground, with the only the opening exposed. It tunnels in a downward slope connecting with tunnels from other catch basins along the way. This is why Portia wasn’t being spotted anywhere. Portia survived 11 almost 12 DAYS down there. She disappeared on a hot day, where there wouldn’t have been any runoff water. But starting the next day, oh boy did it rain and has been raining for days. She had access to water, praise God! During the time she was missing one of the owner’s friends said she knew people who had a gift from God to find lost animals. The friend paid for these ladies to see if they could find Portia. Initially her owner was hesitant, but figured it couldn’t hurt to see what they said since there weren’t any sitings. She couldn’t physically find Portia no matter where she searched and how long she searched. For the last 4days before she was found, they kept advising Portia’s owner that her fur baby should be within a thousand feet radius of her home. Her owner thoroughly searched more, nothing. They gave her places each day, all within a 200 feet or less, right to home. Portia’s owner even bought a rotisserie chicken (Portia’s favorite) and sat near the spot she was supposed to be and waited with the chicken a few hours. Nothing. She made a rotisserie crumb path home. Nothing. Going on the fourth day her owner was getting discouraged, Portia wasn’t physically there, coming out, or barking. Just nothing. The day Portia was found, we had just found out there are connecting tunnels. We think she WAS in those spots, just underground. Even one of the ladies previously saw an image of a small stream, but tiny. Could that have been the water that would have been overflowing into the pipe due to all the rain? Might be a really good coincidence, but I don’t think so. It makes sense. God CAN talk through anyone or anything He chooses. God has grown our faith all the more in this journey, as well as in all the wonderful people who helped look online, in their neighborhoods, even if just on their drive home, and those who prayed. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! I hope this story inspires you today. God is good!
