Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

I am getting the run around - looking for adopting a dog that Santa Fe Humane had a few days ago - was told I couldn't adopt anymore - want a specific dog I helped rescue. I was told the dog waa "placed" but no one can tell me what that means and they told me they couldn't tell me if the dog was being sent somewhere and where I could go to adopt this dog. Very frustrating no one will help me. How does this help a dog getting adopted???? I'm suspecious as ton what happened to this dog? Why won't anyone tell me where I can find the dog???? This isn't right - Is Santa Fe Shelter and Humnane "hiding something?" I'm in search of an answer and very sad the dog I want to adopt is just "not available" yet was not adopted - if sent somewhere to another shelter why can't I know that so I can go and adopt from another shelter - even if out of state/?????? Something wrong with your organization - I'm going to continue to find answers and you are doing things that are not transparent for helping a dog find a good home. I thought you were suppose to care about the animals you take in?????? Would like an answer.
