About this Cat

Tony (approximately 3 years old) has been a stray in our neighborhood for the last 2 years—I would call him a community cat not a feral. In February 2025, we were able to lure him into a cat carrier and take him to the Humane Society of Southwest Washington (HSSW) – he had an injured leg. HSSW attended to his leg, neutered him, vaccinated him, treated him for fleas and worms and whatever other wonderful things they do at the HSSW. Originally, I was going to adopt him; however, it turned out that he is FIV positive. Here is a URL at WEBMD that talks about FIV in cats: https://www.webmd.com/pets/cats/cat-fiv-feline-immunodeficiency-virus. It is not transferrable to humans—only other cats. Because I own three other cats, I didn’t want to expose my indoor cats. At some point, HSSW decided to release him back to our neighborhood because they thought he was not a good candidate to be an indoor cat – he was aggressive towards the staff and bit one of the staff (fully transparent here). Normally they would not release a FIV cat back outdoors; however (according to the HSSW), our neighborhood has other strays and ferals with FIV. Since Tony has returned to our neighborhood, he has lived on our front porch. He does not leave our front porch other than to go potty. I feed him, brush him, keep flea medication on him, and play with him. And he always wants to come in the house—he actually cries to come in. He purrs and rubs up against me and my husband when we join him on the porch and will sit on our laps – he is definitely a lap cat and very sweet. He is also friendly to visitors. He follows me around the yard when I do yardwork. As to his biting: He has also bitten me-but not hard. First thing is that he seems to have petting sensitivity. After a few pets or so he seems to not enjoy it and bites or swats. Also, when I leave the front porch and go back in the house, occasionally he has run at me and one time bit me in the leg – not a hard bite. I see this as he doesn’t want me to leave him on the front porch and also that he was never taught good manners. I have been working on him not to bite at me when I go in the house with a loud whistle when he tries. (I also wear tall boots – just in case lol). He is improving and has not tried to bite us when we leave the front porch for a few weeks. Since Tony is outside, he is not using a litter box; however, he used a litter box at HSSW without problems. I would love to find Tony an indoor home as a single cat or with another cat with FIV. He absolute has to be an indoor cat because of his FIV – we don’t want to spread FIV to other neighborhoods. I would not recommend that he go to a home with children due to his petting sensitivity and bad manners. He really needs someone to love him. I would also take him back as a porch cat if it didn’t work out.

How will Tony receive the contribution?

The adopting family is the only party eligible to receive the contribution. If you adopted the Tony, thank you for providing a home and a loving family! Please begin the process of claiming Tony's contribution here.

For adoptions in which nokillnetwork.org was the matchmaker and we have contact information for both parties, we make every effort to contact the adopting family. For adoptions that were not facilitated by nokillnetwork.org, we still encourage the adopting family to claim the contribution by submitting the necessary information.

The adopting family is the only party eligible to receive the contribution. The adopting family will be required to provide proof of adoption between 4-6 weeks after adoption. This is to ensure that the home is a good match and Tony was not returned. After we have verified the adoption, Tony’s balance will be sent to the adopting family. Our staff provides instructions and help throughout this process.

What happens to unclaimed funds?

We want the Tony’s balance to go to the adopting family as a way to say thank you for providing a loving home and to help with pet care expenses. In the unfortunate event we cannot contact them and verify the adoption, Tony’s balance will remain in our general fund. This fund may be used to match contributions made to other adoptable pets, incentify other adoption-related actions, promote our mission, or support the operating expenses of nokillnetwork.org. If you would like to make a direct contribution to nokillnetwork.org to help us help other pets in need, you can go here. We appreciate your generosity and help!
