About this Dog
Meet Carlos. Carlos and his sibling, Pixie, lived as outside dogs without proper shelter, protection, or vet care. Their mom was older and sadly did not survive a recent cold weather stretch, and the two pups were often seen running freely near a busy road. Thankfully, a concerned neighbor took action and reached out to our rescue for help. Both dogs are still young, adaptable, and very good-natured. Carlos has been with his foster family for a few weeks, learning the rules of home life. He’s living with a mom, dad, a Chihuahua named Higgins, and three cats and is doing well as part of a pack. His foster mom, Amy, shared that he was a very easy integration, and they adore him! We checked in with Amy with some questions for an update: How is Carlos doing with your Chi and kitties? He is doing great. It was honestly such an easy integration. He loves Higgins and the cats. He even kisses them! Even when my cat hissed, he did not show aggression. Do you think he would do better in a home with dogs or be fine as an only dog? I think he is best paired with another dog. He gets anxious when left alone. He will bark when I leave and keep watch at the window. He’s getting better with time and will play with Higgins while I am at work. He likes to move my PJs to the living room and sit beside them until I get home…it’s the cutest thing. Would you say he’s an active, moderate energy or more mellow dog? He acts like a puppy with toys. He plays but is also calm and settles down easily. He isn’t high energy but still has that puppy play in him. He likes to snuggle a lot too. Leash walking skills? He’s brand new to leash walking and a little panicky. We have been doing on-leash practice walks in the backyard. He’s going to need time and practice to adapt, so a home with a fenced area for potty breaks will be best for him right now. Have you seen him around kids? He did great around my friend’s son (he is 11). He doesn’t seem nervous and wags his tail for some love! He isn’t a biter or mouthy like a lot of small dogs. Personality - What’s he like? He is a bit shy and guarded with new people but snuggles with me. He sleeps with us at night between the two of us and doesn’t budge all night long! He lets me give him kisses and wags his little tail. Now that he is comfortable, he gets so excited when I come home. Before, he was shy, like who is this person? So, he’s warming up and starting to trust. Each day his personality comes out more… House Manners - crate/potty trained? He is not a fan of the crate and will scratch to get out, so we are slowly introducing it to him. When he first arrived, he was not neutered and did mark. Now that he’s been neutered, the marking has stopped and he knows to go potty outside. He never has accidents when we are home, and we take him out regularly, and he’s picked it up quickly. He chewed on one of our chords to an electronic blanket where he sleeps on the couch. I unplugged and moved it, and other than that, he’s been good. He’s young, like a toddler, and just not fully trustworthy yet. Does he greet new people and visitors well? He does. He’s cautious at first, but then his little tail wags and he welcomes new people. Honestly, this dog is a hoot and the sweetest thing ever. He has a kind little soul. He lets me kiss his little face. He shows no aggressive behavior toward people or pets. He is timid outside of his comfort zone but completely relaxed at my home and in my fenced yard. I would say he has improved a great deal and just needs time to adapt. He is just a special little guy and each day he seems to become even sweeter. Someone is going to be very lucky with this little guy! ******** Preference will be given to adopters with other dogs in the home and yard for potty breaks. Carlos is NOT a city/condo dog .
