About this Dog
Meet Phoebe. This adorable little pocket Pittie showed up at the home of an older woman in South Carolina who took her into safety and reached out to rescue for help. We don't know how long Phoebe was living as a stray, but she's a young pup and was in good shape when we met her, so it probably wasn't long. Before making the trip to N. Va., Phoebe was fostered in SC, where we quickly learned that she was a very warm, affectionate, and kid-friendly dog who loves to snuggle. She spent a lot of time around the grandkids in her foster home, and gravitated to them from the first meeting and would follow them everywhere. Phoebe also has excellent house manners. She is potty trained and crate trained, and will go into her crate without a peep. She loves to chew on toys and can keep herself entertained in the home, and is never destructive. You can take toys away from her, and she has no guarding issues. She enjoys car rides and will jump right in when asked, and sit quietly in the back seat. Phoebe was fostered with two other dogs in SC and can enjoy pup companionship. She gets excited when she meets a new dog, so a gradual introduction is required. Phoebe would do well paired with another calm, large dog to learn from, but would be fine as an only dog too. When Phoebe arrived, she had her first real exposure to leash walking. We discovered she was high-excitement on leash and reactive to other dogs. She has a strong prey drive to chase critters, and can jump a 5' fence in her attempt to catch them. To correct this behavior, we sent Phoebe to board-and-train with our favorite trainers for a few weeks to get her better prepared for her new home. She was fostered with two different trainers on the team, living with both young kids and other dogs. Both trainers did a gradual introduction to their pack, and Phoebe does well with other dogs once given a managed introduction. The trainer's dogs well behaved, as you might expect, and she learns from them. UPDATE - 6/3/20 At the trainer's home, Phoebe lived with two other dogs, her trainer foster mom, Brittany, and her husband. Brittany shared this update: "Great dog! She's been a ton of fun. Super friendly, loving and social with both my husband and I. She's great with my pack. Confident dog with a spunky personality who adjusts quickly and makes herself right at home. She's food motivated and loves to work her daily obedience reps. I introduced 'place,' which will help build an overall calmness and for her to learn to just chill. Like most high energy dogs this was a challenge for her at first, but now she is able to be calm and chill in my house. She's a big love and a great snuggler. She's respectful and even if I'm moving around or cooking dinner, she will find a close spot to just lay, or she will chew on a bone and keep herself entertained. She's also great in the crate, no issues there. I always get myself ready and together before letting the dogs out and she's quiet as a mouse and patiently waits in her crate. Her real training and work needed is outside. She gets very excited to go outside and wants to bust out the door. We've been working on her thresholds and she must sit-stay before being released to go out. This allows her to be in a better mind set before even stepping out. Her heel is good and she's gotten better with responding to the prong and taking correction. She needs a capable owner/handler who will correct her when it's needed. She will see bunnies, dogs, squirrels on our walks but at this point she doesn't lung, break heel, or make noise. She stays in heel and as soon as I see her key up I'll give her a pop and "leave it". She needs a 6 foot fence for sure. She hasn't even thought about jumping my fence. Does her own thing out back. Loves toys and balls and just overall a fantastic dog." Phoebe has good people social skills and would be great in an active home with kids, and is best paired with a calm, confident dog. The best home for Phoebe is in a quiet, low-traffic neighborhood and an experienced dog owner who will continue her leash training. Phoebe is not a great fit for the city or condo life. A home with a fenced yard would be ideal, but it needs to be at least 6ft to keep her securely contained. FOSTER UPDATE - 6/2/20 After she completed training, Phoebe went to a local foster home and is living with a 2 foster parents and 2 dogs in Falls Church. She has a large fenced yard to romp in and a moderately active neighborhood. Her leash walking skills have improved, and her foster dad, James, has continued her training work. James shared this update... "Phoebe is adorable, naturally happy, and so eager to please. She’s 1,000 pounds of personality in a 40 pound package. I’ve almost forgotten how little she actually is (relative to my other pups). In the house, her favorite activity is to cuddle on the couch. She is a master of eye contact, and her big brown eyes are enough to melt your heart. It feels like I have entire conversations with her without saying a word. The only thing she chews inside is her frozen bones, an activity that can keep her busy for hours. She chills out inside, and does great left alone. She loves my dogs, and they love her! It took about a week for Phoebe and Riley (my anxious guy) to get used to each other, but now they won’t sleep apart. And she hit it off instantly with Max and Stew. She’s also great with children. My young nieces can’t get enough of her, and of course, she’s happy to oblige. In the yard, she loves to play fetch and wrestle. Stew is a 70-pound AmStaff, and he and Phoebe wear each other out. She only plays hard out in the yard, which is lucky for us, because she’s incredibly athletic. She’s a fast runner and a high jumper. We’ve been working hard on leash training. She will sometimes become overly excited when she sees other dogs out on walks, but is improving with consistent training. She knows how to walk on a leash—and is better than my pups on walks most of the time. However, there are still walks where Phoebe’s desire to please us loses to her need to squawk at strange dogs, so this will likely require long-term, consistent work. Luckily, all we have to do is track the direction of her huge ears to understand if she needs a quick correction. She’ll be 100 percent be worth it for the right owner. I’d adopt her in a second if I could fit another into the mix. I can’t wait to see what is in store for Phoebe—to see how happy she is when she finds her match. In the meantime, I’ll just have to continue laughing and playing with her over at my place." The key with Phoebe is exercise, structure, and consistency in training. She is adorable but also knows how to push boundaries. She's so eager to please, and will respond well to an owner who can both lead and lover her. Worthy Dog will donate a training session to Phoebe's adopter to make sure she has a smooth transition to her new home. Phoebe is NOT a good fit for a condo or a city dog. Needs experienced owner.
