About this Dog
Hi, my name is Maggie and I am a 3 year-old spayed female Akbash. I’m looking for a new home. Oh, I love my current home, and everyone in it. That would be my mom, my brother the Great Pyr, and even my sister, the orange tabby cat. And they all love me – very much. I’m looking for a new home because I am really high spirited - a bit too high spirited for my mom and she wants me to be able to really be myself in my life! She doesn’t want to hold me back. Here is a little bit about me. I am super friendly and want to go home with everyone who comes to visit. And, people who meet me feel the same way about me. When I am waiting in the car, people come up all the time to talk to me and say hello! They often ask my mom about me and one woman said, “this dog is special. I can tell and I know dogs.” I felt really proud when she said that and happy that my mom totally agreed with her. I have this big endearing grin that wins people’s hearts and I wag my tail like crazy when I see you or you call my name. It will steal your heart!! And did I mention that I love to snuggle? Oh, boy do I love to get and give loving! If there isn’t snuggling to be had then I want to be outside guarding my territory. I live to protect my place. I sit like a sentry guard and not much escapes my notice. I don’t let anything, in the air or on the ground, come into my space. I will sit out there come rain or snow – I don’t mind because I live to chase things away. So, if you have a problem with those big crows – or deer getting into your garden - no worries, I’m on it! I have a very loud voice, which I love to use when I chase things away. Sometimes I just run around barking to let anything that might be around know that I am here. So, a good home for me would be with someone who doesn’t mind barking and who doesn’t have neighbors who will be annoyed with my barking. Sometimes, well maybe more than sometimes, I smell things in the ground and just have to get to the bottom of it, which may be a couple feet down in the ground. But I don’t mind and believe me, I am a fast digger. I can send that dirt flying to find out what is down there. I get along well with other dogs when I go to the groomer. I am a bit fearful of them when we pass them on a walk. If they come towards us, I am ready to take them on. I might need some help learning what to do in these situations. The virus has made it hard for my mom to get much help for me with this and for me to be socialized with other dogs. I do best with a lot of praise and consistency. I have been scared in the past and tend to flinch if something like a hand comes toward my face and I am getting better about that. I am a very quick learner and am highly intelligent. Sometimes I just don’t want to do what people want me to do - like come back if I am off leash. I know I am supposed to stay around but, come on, when there is something out there how can I just leave it? I can also jump pretty high and will do it if I want to chase something. I will be very devoted to you and protecting your property. Not to brag and I don’t think it’s possible for you not to love me… Maggie is a dear soul. She is very loving. Everyone who meets her loves her. It is with many tears and sleepless nights that I have listed her. A horse trainer turned dog trainer said to me that she feels it isn’t fair to a horse or a rider when someone chooses to keep a horse that is too much for them. And so, with those words, I made the decision to list Maggie. I live in an area with a large number of predators. Walking with Maggie is stressful for me as I walk alone, and she is always on the scent of something. Usually it is a chipmunk but it could, and has been, a bear. So, pretty much the whole walk I am on edge because she is. I also have to keep her on leash. She is a strong muscular dog – our vet described her as an athlete. She knows how to heel and her drive to hunt and chase is very strong and over-rides her knowledge of heeling. If you decide to adopt Maggie, please consider how that will be for you. Despite her eagerness to chase, she is on the anxious side and this anxiety also plays into her hypervigilance. She needs someone with some strength as if she senses something, she has pulled me over. She needs someone who either lives in an area where you can ignore her reactivity because there aren’t predators to be concerned about or be the type of person that you would not be bothered by this type of reactivity – knowing it could be a grizzly or a robin that she is sensing behind those trees. She has never been a working LGD. She would certainly work to keep predators away and would need training. I’m unsure that she would take on a bear by herself and really wouldn’t want her to do that. She would need a wing dog. I hope that this gives you a good picture of my dear sweet Maggie so that you can decide whether she is a good fit for your home.
