I first heard Jax crying his lungs out in an abandoned house—really just a frame of what used to be a home. He was tucked away in the back, and I could see him from the front, but there was no safe way to reach him. I had to leave that day, but I couldn’t stop thinking about him. The next day, I returned and meowed. Jax meowed back! His eyes were crusty, but he could still see enough to know someone was coming for him. He kept backing up, and I knew I had one chance before he crawled under a canoe in the backyard. I scooped him up and placed him in a carrier. At first, he hissed when I reached out—but the moment I held him close, he purred... and never hissed again. Jax may play rough and act tough, but pick him up, give him a few kisses, and he’ll kiss you back before falling asleep in your arms.
