About this Dog

I am reaching out because, with a very heavy heart, my family needs to surrender our 7-year-old male Rottweiler. This is an incredibly difficult decision for all of us, and our first priority is finding him a safe and appropriate home or rescue placement rather than having to consider euthanasia.

He is a 97-pound, intact male Rottweiler. His vaccinations are completely up to date, and I have all of his veterinary paperwork available. He is house trained, has never been kept in a crate, and has always had a lot of freedom and space. He has access to a wooded half-acre backyard and spends a good balance of time indoors and outdoors. He sleeps inside with the family.

He knows numerous verbal commands including sit, stay, down and shake. He also responds to hand signals and non-verbal commands. He is a very happy, energetic and affectionate dog with the people he knows.

I also want to be completely transparent about his history because I understand how important that information is when considering a surrender.

He has been the aggressor toward our other male dog, Calhoun, who is a midsize mixed-breed dog. There have been three incidents over approximately five years. After the first incident, we began keeping the two dogs separated. Unfortunately, on two occasions an unlocked gate or an outside door that was inadvertently left open allowed them to get together, resulting in the other incidents. The most recent incident occurred three days ago.

Because of this history, we have maintained separation between the dogs and understand that he would need to be placed in a home where he would not be expected to live with another male dog. I do not want to minimize or conceal this behavior, and I want you to have the complete picture before making any decision.

Importantly, he has not demonstrated this aggression toward people. He is very good with children and adults he knows. He does not like strangers reaching out and touching him, however. If an unfamiliar person tries to touch him, he may give a low growl as a warning, but he has not shown his teeth or attacked the person. We have respected that boundary.

He is a wonderful dog in so many ways, which is what makes this decision so heartbreaking. He is happy, intelligent, well trained, knows his commands, enjoys being outside, and has been a very important part of our family for seven years.

I am including photographs of him with this email, and I can provide his complete vaccination/veterinary records and answer any questions you have about his behavior, history, routines, or personality.

I know his history may make placement more difficult, but I am desperately hoping there is an appropriate option for him. We love this dog, and surrendering him is not something we ever imagined having to do. We simply need to find a safe solution for everyone involved.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for considering him. I am available anytime by phone and will cooperate fully with whatever information or evaluation you need.

Thank you,

Bob Elliott

How will Norman receive the contribution?

The adopting family is the only party eligible to receive the contribution. If you adopted the Norman, thank you for providing a home and a loving family! Please begin the process of claiming Norman's contribution here.

For adoptions in which nokillnetwork.org was the matchmaker and we have contact information for both parties, we make every effort to contact the adopting family. For adoptions that were not facilitated by nokillnetwork.org, we still encourage the adopting family to claim the contribution by submitting the necessary information.

The adopting family is the only party eligible to receive the contribution. The adopting family will be required to provide proof of adoption between 4-6 weeks after adoption. This is to ensure that the home is a good match and Norman was not returned. After we have verified the adoption, Norman’s balance will be sent to the adopting family. Our staff provides instructions and help throughout this process.

What happens to unclaimed funds?

We want the Norman’s balance to go to the adopting family as a way to say thank you for providing a loving home and to help with pet care expenses. In the unfortunate event we cannot contact them and verify the adoption, Norman’s balance will remain in our general fund. This fund may be used to match contributions made to other adoptable pets, incentify other adoption-related actions, promote our mission, or support the operating expenses of nokillnetwork.org. If you would like to make a direct contribution to nokillnetwork.org to help us help other pets in need, you can go here. We appreciate your generosity and help!
