I don't know how a person could have to use the words i am sorry i am full. Must be heartbreaking to turn away an animal. They can only do what they can do. However Karen at Le Fonti in Carlisle will be up all night many a night trying desperately to find a shelter who can save a life.

Karen is wonderful and clearly puts all the dogs under her care first. If someone would be willing to lay down their own life for a dog that can be saved, it would be Karen. Rational and honest, Karen is not afraid to be truthful and is careful about where her dogs are rehomed. If a dog were to show that rehoming was not a possibility, Karen is unafraid to take on the responsibility of their care, such is her unconditional love for all the animals that go into her rescue.

If your dog is not chipped GET IT DONE, NO EXCUSE. it costs a small amount of money for peace of mind when someone finds your pet and can return it safely and quickly

Where would it be without volunteers, Ask what can be done, explain what you are available to do to help. Not everyone can dog walk. Collect blankets, sheets, food. Ask what help is needed

Yes i totally agree, it must be better now with social media. Facebook is a boon for free advertising. Imagine what it was like before social media was not available. Must have been really hard for charities. Even thru social media it can still be difficult to get the word out there.

This must be a nightmare for rescues having to keep forking out for vet bills. They are not cheap. So if you can't adopt donate something. Even if it just your time.

If you adopt a dog and you can not cope, turn back to your shelter for advice and support. There is a lot of support out there. You Are Not Alone. If you have a dog and truly can not cope you should return the dog to where you got him. At least you tried. However each dog has their own style and personality. It might have come from a bad home and been mis treated. It now needs to trust you. It has to learn your ways. It will need a lot of attention throughout the day. Just a cuddle for 2 seconds can make the difference

Yes i totally agree, it breaks my heart to have heard that a dog has been put to sleep thru no fault of it's own. It is not easy taking on a dog. They bark, they chew, they hate being left. Everyone has to train a dog, you can not expect a dog to know unless you teach it, and praise it for when it has done well.

Our local group Le Fonti dog rescue here in Carlisle does just that. Karen and Mr. Steve and her lovely Daughter do continuos work around the clock with their house full of doggies. I get to know them through her Face Book Page, and the lovely adopters who send in regular reports and photographs.

Our wonderful nutty dog came to us via Karen. We cannot thank her enough for choosing us as rescue family for a dog in need. She has bought us such joy, so from needing a home to being a part of our family was fantastic for all of us. I cannot recommend Karen and her rescue center enough. 💗

I cannot commend Le Fonti Dog Rescue enough. Due to a change in circumstances, my partner and I were unable to keep our lovely dog. We were dubious to give him up to just anyone as we had heard too many stories about what can happen to dogs given free to good homes. We were told about Karen at Le Fonti and approached her for help rehousing our boy. She was very honest & professional from the start and asked us for a behavioural overview about his likes/dislikes and any phobias or quirks so she could provide the best care for him. We were also informed that there was a waiting period as Le Fonti are a responsible rehoming rescue and do not take on more animals than they can care for at any given time which we thought was excellent as it meant our boy's welfare was already being considered. When the time came for us to say our very tearful goodbyes, Karen was so understanding and kept us (and still does) up to date with his progress, his new home and how well he is doing. He will always remain a part of our lives, and we are so happy that we found Le Fonti! Thank you so much for all your kindness and help.

Le Fonti dog Rescue is a fantastic organisation. We got our dog from karen at le fonti and she was extremely helpful and knowledgable about the dogs and the breeds. Karen had many discussions with myself about the type of dog would be most suited to our home, she fulfilled thorough home checks etc on us and then let our dog have a meet and greet with us. Due to Karen's expertise, our rehomed dog is a perfect fit to our family and we couldn't be happier. If I capuld give more than 5 stars for the fantastic work Karen and her team do I would.

1. Feral Cat TNR Program

Many communities are embracing Trap, Neuter, Release programs (TNR) to improve animal welfare, reduce death rates, and meet obligations to public welfare.

2. High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

Low cost, high volume spay/neuter will quickly lead to fewer animals entering the shelter system, allowing more resources to be allocated toward saving lives.

3. Rescue Groups

An adoption or transfer to a rescue group frees up scarce cage and kennel space, reduces expenses for feeding, cleaning, killing, and improves a community's rate of lifesaving. In an environment of millions of dogs and cats killed in shelters annually, rare is the circumstance in which a rescue group should be denied an animal.

4. Foster Care

Volunteer foster care is crucial to No Kill. Without it, saving lives is compromised. It is a low cost, and often no cost, way of increasing a shelter's capacity, improving public relations, increasing a shelter's public image, rehabilitating sick and injured or behaviorally challenged animals, and saving lives.

5. Comprehensive Adoption Programs

Adoptions are vital to an agency's lifesaving mission. The quantity and quality of shelter adoptions is in shelter management's hands, making lifesaving a direct function of shelter policies and practice. In fact, studies show people get their animals from shelters only 20% of the time. If shelters better promoted their animals and had adoption programs responsive to the needs of the community, including public access hours for working people, offsite adoptions, adoption incentives, and effective marketing, they could increase the number of homes available and replace killing with adoptions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, shelters can adopt their way out of killing.

6. Pet Retention

While some of the reasons animals are surrendered to shelters are unavoidable, others can be prevented-but only if shelters are willing to work with people to help them solve their problems. Saving animals requires communities to develop innovative strategies for keeping people and their companion animals together. And the more a community sees its shelters as a place to turn for advice and assistance, the easier this job will be.

7. Medical and Behavior Programs

In order to meet its commitment to a lifesaving guarantee for all savable animals, shelters need to keep animals happy and healthy and keep animals moving through the system. To do this, shelters must put in place comprehensive vaccination, handling, cleaning, socialization, and care policies before animals get sick and rehabilitative efforts for those who come in sick, injured, unweaned, or traumatized.

8. Public Relations/Community Involvement

Increasing adoptions, maximizing donations, recruiting volunteers and partnering with community agencies comes down to one thing: increasing the shelter's exposure. And that means consistent marketing and public relations. Public relations and marketing are the foundation of all a shelter's activities and their success. To do all these things well, the shelter must be in the public eye.

9. Volunteers

Volunteers are a dedicated "army of compassion" and the backbone of a successful No Kill effort. There is never enough staff, never enough dollars to hire more staff, and always more needs than paid human resources. That is where volunteers come in and make the difference between success and failure and, for the animals, life and death.

10. Proactive Redemptions

One of the most overlooked areas for reducing killing in animal control shelters are lost animal reclaims. Sadly, besides having pet owners fill out a lost pet report, very little effort is made in this area of shelter operations. This is unfortunate because doing so-primarily shifting from passive to a more proactive approach-has proven to have a significant impact on lifesaving and allow shelters to return a large percentage of lost animals to their families.

11. A Compassionate Director

The final element of the No Kill equation is the most important of all, without which all other elements are thwarted-a hard working, compassionate animal control or shelter director not content to regurgitate tired cliches or hide behind the myth of "too many animals, not enough homes." Unfortunately, this one is also oftentimes the hardest one to demand and find.
