Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Dog Rescue Dunedin officially began on 9th Dec, 2011 when co-ordinator Dr Jo Pollard signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding with Dunedin City Council`s Animal Control staff.
Dogs picked up by Animal Control only have seven days in which to be claimed. Unclaimed dogs are available to the public for $100 but only a minority of dogs find homes this way. The rest are "put down". For years the Otago SPCA took in many of these dogs but it has had a change of policy.
Dunedin Dog Rescue has been set up to rescue these condemned dogs by providing veterinary care, food and home-based foster care, and advertising them until they find their "forever homes". Each time resources allow and a fosterer is available, another condemned pound dog is rescued.
We are Incorporated and are now a Charitable Trust.
