Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

The day we adopted our cats was a warm, sunny spring day and the adoption center was slammed. With all staff needing to be three places at once, several volunteers helped us get the paperwork we needed, and were extremely helpful.

We were able to adopt two adult cats, a bonded pair probably from the same litter, from Seattle Humane Society in Bellevue, Washington. The experience showed them to be a purpose-driven organization that's effective in carrying out their mission. The cats we adopted had been brought to the shelter as kittens and returned due to behavioral issues. We adopted them as two-year-olds. This seems like an example of a no-kill shelter going the extra mile to accept these cats back after their first adoption. I'm unsure if the cats would still be alive if they'd initially been brought to another shelter. We were able to adopt them after they'd received full veterinary services, and they're healthy and adjusting well. The Seattle Humane Society has also called us twice to follow up and see how the cats are doing.
