Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

I adopted Mack ( red dachshund) when he was 18 mos old, he is now 9 years old....thought you might like to know Mack is a wonderful dog, we lost Oscar just before Christmas and Mack has adjusted well to being the only dog....Unfortunately on Thursday this week, he came down with his back and could not stand on hind legs...I rushed him to Louisville at Metropolitan where they only have specialists...Mack had emergency back surgery and is now recouperating and doing fine. He came home today...I went through this with my dachshund Buddy, and know how to care for him. I believe he will have a good recovery. Thank you for such a wonderful dog. Clara Sullivan
