Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

Adoptable Pets in Maryland
(report broken link)
The St. Marys Animal Welfare League (SMAWL) is a non-profit membership organization working to help the homeless, abused and neglected animals in our local community and, in times of extreme need, in our larger national rescue community. Immediate goals include aggressive campaigns to find homes for homeless cats and dogs and to curb pet overpopulation through Spay/Neuter programs. Future goals include the building of a no-kill shelter in St. Marys County.
Services provided include pet adoptions, spay/neuter grants and discount vouchers, monthly low-cost rabies clinics and humane education. In addition, we recently started the regions only Pet Food Pantry to serve low-income and recently unemployed pet owners. SMAWL is an all volunteer organization and welcomes new members and volunteers. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities, including fostering animals waiting for adoption.
Vision
St. Marys Animal Welfare League is the leading animal welfare organization in St. Marys County with exemplary shelter and lifesaving programs that creates positive and humane outcomes for companion animals and community cats.
Mission
St. Marys Animal Welfare League provides animal welfare services for pets and people through rescue, spay/neuter, pet retention, and advocacy programs in order to create a safety net for companion animals and community cats.
