The AWL does a wonderful job of getting animals out into the community where they can bring comfort and joy to people in need. I know that this effort will expand when they move into their new headquarters. This is a valuable organization in our community!

The director goes out and does a radio program every Wednesday to promote new initiatives and upcoming events. Their strong social media presence allows them to show off new animals and pricing specials, or to promote fundraising via crowdfunding websites.

Darla, the director works tirelessly to keep the shelter running smoothly, keep the adoption rates high and EU low with a very limited budget and deteriorating building. She very much believes in not putting down animals for space reasons or any unnecessary reasons, unless it would be inhumane not to do so such as if the animal is in severe pain/dying and is not treatable.

AWL uses Facebook to communicate with owners of pets if AWL thinks they found a person's pet and doesn't have a phone number to call them with. They also receive many lost reports through Facebook and email which are then added to a lost/found database if the animal isn't already listed there, this allows other shelters to report it found as well.

AWL has many volunteers that go to their events, and they go out and do pet therapies for nursing and retirement homes which helps socialize the animals and makes the residents happy. The volunteers they have are their main helpers when it comes to events because they help set up and bring/handle animals.

Every animal they have ready for adoption is vaccinated, their employees know how to properly handle pets, everything is cleaned with bleach to keep down the smells and sickness, they allow people to take dogs/cats out of the cages and walk them outside where there is a trail and a fenced in area. Their sick animals are kept away from the general population to not spread disease and every precaution is taken to ensure the safety of animals. If an animal has been traumatized, employees and people get warned to be slow and gentle with the animal so it will not get scared and bite someone when it could have been prevented.

AWL is always giving people advice especially through social media and emailing which reduces pet surrendering and returns and increases adoptions.

They have a social media standing on Twitter and Facebook where they post pets of the week/day and information on events and special pricing. They have events at Petsmart and fundraisers where they have animals available for adoption. They give out goodie bags for people that just adopted which has coupons and vouchers for a free first vet visit as well as useful info on the kind of animal you have.

If there is too little space and they get a litter of kittens, they'll try to find someone who is willing to take care of the kittens until there is enough room or until they are old enough. Same goes for puppies.

Unfortunately my experience was not as great as some of the others. I called the shelter several hours prior to visiting, made an appointment, and gave the name if the pet I was coming to hopefully adopt. I went over the website with a fine tooth comb to make sure I was fully prepared to go and adopt my new friend. When I arrived I was taken to meet the puppy on which my heart was set. I then explained that was interested in adopting the sweet boy. I was THEN, AND ONLY THEN, told that I had to make another appointment ti drive the 1.5 one way, hour drive again, make another appointment to let my dog at home meet the new "Would've Been" family member. There is ZERO mention of this on the website, nor was I told this when when I called. This was an EXTREMELY heartbreaking experience as we were not able to make the return trip!!!

This experience was entirely the fault of staff that were not familiar enough with the rules of the shelter to relay accurate information, or to post accurate information on their website!!!

1. Feral Cat TNR Program

Many communities are embracing Trap, Neuter, Release programs (TNR) to improve animal welfare, reduce death rates, and meet obligations to public welfare.

2. High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

Low cost, high volume spay/neuter will quickly lead to fewer animals entering the shelter system, allowing more resources to be allocated toward saving lives.

3. Rescue Groups

An adoption or transfer to a rescue group frees up scarce cage and kennel space, reduces expenses for feeding, cleaning, killing, and improves a community's rate of lifesaving. In an environment of millions of dogs and cats killed in shelters annually, rare is the circumstance in which a rescue group should be denied an animal.

4. Foster Care

Volunteer foster care is crucial to No Kill. Without it, saving lives is compromised. It is a low cost, and often no cost, way of increasing a shelter's capacity, improving public relations, increasing a shelter's public image, rehabilitating sick and injured or behaviorally challenged animals, and saving lives.

5. Comprehensive Adoption Programs

Adoptions are vital to an agency's lifesaving mission. The quantity and quality of shelter adoptions is in shelter management's hands, making lifesaving a direct function of shelter policies and practice. In fact, studies show people get their animals from shelters only 20% of the time. If shelters better promoted their animals and had adoption programs responsive to the needs of the community, including public access hours for working people, offsite adoptions, adoption incentives, and effective marketing, they could increase the number of homes available and replace killing with adoptions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, shelters can adopt their way out of killing.

6. Pet Retention

While some of the reasons animals are surrendered to shelters are unavoidable, others can be prevented-but only if shelters are willing to work with people to help them solve their problems. Saving animals requires communities to develop innovative strategies for keeping people and their companion animals together. And the more a community sees its shelters as a place to turn for advice and assistance, the easier this job will be.

7. Medical and Behavior Programs

In order to meet its commitment to a lifesaving guarantee for all savable animals, shelters need to keep animals happy and healthy and keep animals moving through the system. To do this, shelters must put in place comprehensive vaccination, handling, cleaning, socialization, and care policies before animals get sick and rehabilitative efforts for those who come in sick, injured, unweaned, or traumatized.

8. Public Relations/Community Involvement

Increasing adoptions, maximizing donations, recruiting volunteers and partnering with community agencies comes down to one thing: increasing the shelter's exposure. And that means consistent marketing and public relations. Public relations and marketing are the foundation of all a shelter's activities and their success. To do all these things well, the shelter must be in the public eye.

9. Volunteers

Volunteers are a dedicated "army of compassion" and the backbone of a successful No Kill effort. There is never enough staff, never enough dollars to hire more staff, and always more needs than paid human resources. That is where volunteers come in and make the difference between success and failure and, for the animals, life and death.

10. Proactive Redemptions

One of the most overlooked areas for reducing killing in animal control shelters are lost animal reclaims. Sadly, besides having pet owners fill out a lost pet report, very little effort is made in this area of shelter operations. This is unfortunate because doing so-primarily shifting from passive to a more proactive approach-has proven to have a significant impact on lifesaving and allow shelters to return a large percentage of lost animals to their families.

11. A Compassionate Director

The final element of the No Kill equation is the most important of all, without which all other elements are thwarted-a hard working, compassionate animal control or shelter director not content to regurgitate tired cliches or hide behind the myth of "too many animals, not enough homes." Unfortunately, this one is also oftentimes the hardest one to demand and find.
