Woof! Meow! One thing before you go…
Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?
Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!

The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County originated June 21, 1923. We are a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Therefore, donations to us are tax deductible. We are a no-kill facility. Our primary goals are to reduce pet overpopulation, and, find forever loving homes for the sick, injured, abused, neglected, and abandoned animals in Decatur and Macon County that come into our facility.
While we are supportive of the Macon County Animal Control and Care Facility and work with them for the benefit of the animals in our community, we are a separate entity.
We offer discount spay/neuter programs all year 'round to low income, unemployed pet owners, senior citizens, and qualifying persons in need.
Our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program for feral cats is helping to reduce cat overpopulation. The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County has spayed and neutered thousands of cats under our TNR program. All were spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, left ear tipped, and returned to their area or relocated to barn homes.
