1. Feral Cat TNR Program

Many communities are embracing Trap, Neuter, Release programs (TNR) to improve animal welfare, reduce death rates, and meet obligations to public welfare.

2. High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

Low cost, high volume spay/neuter will quickly lead to fewer animals entering the shelter system, allowing more resources to be allocated toward saving lives.

3. Rescue Groups

An adoption or transfer to a rescue group frees up scarce cage and kennel space, reduces expenses for feeding, cleaning, killing, and improves a community's rate of lifesaving. In an environment of millions of dogs and cats killed in shelters annually, rare is the circumstance in which a rescue group should be denied an animal.

4. Foster Care

Volunteer foster care is crucial to No Kill. Without it, saving lives is compromised. It is a low cost, and often no cost, way of increasing a shelter's capacity, improving public relations, increasing a shelter's public image, rehabilitating sick and injured or behaviorally challenged animals, and saving lives.

5. Comprehensive Adoption Programs

Adoptions are vital to an agency's lifesaving mission. The quantity and quality of shelter adoptions is in shelter management's hands, making lifesaving a direct function of shelter policies and practice. In fact, studies show people get their animals from shelters only 20% of the time. If shelters better promoted their animals and had adoption programs responsive to the needs of the community, including public access hours for working people, offsite adoptions, adoption incentives, and effective marketing, they could increase the number of homes available and replace killing with adoptions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, shelters can adopt their way out of killing.

6. Pet Retention

While some of the reasons animals are surrendered to shelters are unavoidable, others can be prevented-but only if shelters are willing to work with people to help them solve their problems. Saving animals requires communities to develop innovative strategies for keeping people and their companion animals together. And the more a community sees its shelters as a place to turn for advice and assistance, the easier this job will be.

7. Medical and Behavior Programs

In order to meet its commitment to a lifesaving guarantee for all savable animals, shelters need to keep animals happy and healthy and keep animals moving through the system. To do this, shelters must put in place comprehensive vaccination, handling, cleaning, socialization, and care policies before animals get sick and rehabilitative efforts for those who come in sick, injured, unweaned, or traumatized.

8. Public Relations/Community Involvement

Increasing adoptions, maximizing donations, recruiting volunteers and partnering with community agencies comes down to one thing: increasing the shelter's exposure. And that means consistent marketing and public relations. Public relations and marketing are the foundation of all a shelter's activities and their success. To do all these things well, the shelter must be in the public eye.

9. Volunteers

Volunteers are a dedicated "army of compassion" and the backbone of a successful No Kill effort. There is never enough staff, never enough dollars to hire more staff, and always more needs than paid human resources. That is where volunteers come in and make the difference between success and failure and, for the animals, life and death.

10. Proactive Redemptions

One of the most overlooked areas for reducing killing in animal control shelters are lost animal reclaims. Sadly, besides having pet owners fill out a lost pet report, very little effort is made in this area of shelter operations. This is unfortunate because doing so-primarily shifting from passive to a more proactive approach-has proven to have a significant impact on lifesaving and allow shelters to return a large percentage of lost animals to their families.

11. A Compassionate Director

The final element of the No Kill equation is the most important of all, without which all other elements are thwarted-a hard working, compassionate animal control or shelter director not content to regurgitate tired cliches or hide behind the myth of "too many animals, not enough homes." Unfortunately, this one is also oftentimes the hardest one to demand and find.

Hi, I have the cutest most loving cat, but I can not keep him due to my service dog developing jealousy towards Max (cat). So I am trying to find Max a new home. He is exactly 1 years and 6 days old, he was born on April 10th 2017, which made him special to me, because that is my B-day. I live in an ADA apartment now due to being in a wheelchair and the constant barking of my dog is getting me in trouble with my apartment manager. I used to live in a house, where Max could go in and out as he pleased, but now he is stuck in my apartment. He has a 72" cat tree, that would go with him. Also, he is neutered and up to date on his rabies shots, but he needs his other shots. Maximillion, Max for short is very loving, he likes to get his head rubbed, especially behind his ears. Again I am only giving him away because I will get evicted if my dog doesn't stop barking the way he is right now. Max can't come close to me without Kody barking. Max is a white cat with partial black head and a few black spots on his body, he is really cute. Please, someone that Loves Cats, give him a good home? P.S. Hi. I found a homeless dog last summer, he was covered in sores, fleas, and ticks, and quite thin. I live in Florida, but was traveling in Arkansas at the time. My cousin took him in, but he desperately needs rehomed now, as it's not working out with him on her farm. He is a hound/lab mix, and chases her horses, goats, cats, ducks, and worst of all, he killed 3 of her chickens. He needs to be in a fenced yard. He's great with children and other dogs, and is neutered. He needs his shots and wormer, she hasn't taken him to the vet. Can you help please?

These three puppies arrived at our home yesterday. We had been hearing shooting all day. A four wheeler has been up and down our road all afternoon. We went to see if we could find out if these puppies belonged to anyone and as we headed out the four Wheeler took off, and a truck came out a peeled away. We went to investigate and best as we can put together they were testing them for being gun shy or not. Looks like they were the lucky ones and got away from the sickos before they got a bullet in their heads for being scared. They seem to have some training for hunting. They are really affectionate and sweet dogs. We already have dogs and cannot keep any more. They need loving homes that will take care of them. All females. We are trying to find homes for them, but no luck so far. Would your facility be able to take them? They are young, prime adoption age, sweet, loving, playful. It doesn't appear their trauma has effected their personalities. The little black one does seem scared, but comes to us for comfort. They are very hungry, but not starved, but have been limited in their food for a whole for sure. Please let us know. I would love to have these babies find their forever homes!

I have a dog that was brought to me by my partner that was found apparently abandoned in Harps parking lot here in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I cannot keep her. My rental doesn't allow dogs of her breed. She is a full blood pitbull. Right around 50lbs. All she wants is love all the time. I can't afford to take care of her, nor do I have the space that she needs to be a dog. I have a 1 bedroom apartment. She was obviously very abused before we found her. She is very submissive and needs a loving and latent home. I hate seeing her couped up in this apartment. I have been trying to find a home for her for months. Please respond if you are interested. She is unspayed and just had puppies before we found her. She is so pretty and sweet. She does great with cats, as I have a cat and also with snakes as I have 2 snakes. She needs supervision when meeting other dogs. Sometimes it goes well and other times, depending on how the other dog behaves, it can be good or bad. I've never seen her attack another dog, only get scared and growl.

Hi there I'm in town until the end of the week helping my Mom recover from surgery. I've seen a calico kitten in the parking lot of nwa Mercy Hospital 2710 S Rife Medical Ln, Rogers, AR 72758 In the parking lot to the left of the main entrance near the valay parking. Several people have tried to catch it since Monday but I don't know how long the kitten has been there. It seems to stay near the first row of parking spaces. I think it would be very easy to trap. 703-586-0064 07 Jul 2017

Hello, Can you tell me a little more about your white shepherd? Is she fixed, housebroken? We have a huge fenced in yard and two teenaged children that would love a dog to take on walks and play with. Our family is looking for a dog that will be happy in the house with us, except when they want out. How is she with kitties as we have two adult cats.

FOUND: Fayetteville, AR. Black & white, appears to be pitbull. Super friendly, a little timid, wouldn't leave our door. She's safe right now waiting for her owners to claim her! No tags, has a collar. No microchip.
