About this Dog

Affectionate. House trained. Loyal. Quiet. Gorgeous! Great in public. Needs to be around people. My husband and I adopted Hazel from a rescue 5 years ago. At the time she was about 2 years old and was pretty timid and skittish from being abused as puppy. With some time and affection she quickly became a loved member of the family. She is hands down the absolute best dog you could possibly ask for, but she has developed severe separation anxiety that we can no longer manage. Hazel is known among our friends as family as the best people dog around. She is incredibly calm and affectionate. At a social gathering you will likely find her lying in the middle of the group. We often bring her to dog friendly restaurants and or to the office, where she is well behaved and a crowd pleaser. Hazel enjoys going on walks around the block, mountain hikes, and lying in the grass. She does not love being in water, but perhaps that could change with training. She has been around older children and a crying infant without any concern, but has not yet been around toddlers or young children. Hazel loves to ride in the car, either sitting in the seat like a person, or standing in the back half of an SUV. She is not much of a barker, but is protective of her house and may bark a couple times at strangers who walk up to the door. Hazel is fully potty trained and is most accustomed to using a doggie door. She enjoys following commands for treats such as sit, lay, stay, spinning around, kiss, and leave it. She is incredibly intelligent and has been quickly trained for other commands around the house. In our house she is not allowed on the furniture, but she does sleep on our bed. However, she waits to jump up until given the command and will jump down if you ask her to. Besides being great with people and incredibly intelligent, Hazel is a gorgeous brindle. Tragically, Hazel’s separation anxiety (common in adult boxers and likely contributed by the arrival of a new baby) has become unmanageable for our household. It is with the heaviest of hearts imaginable that we seek to rehome her. Over the past year what began as small misbehaviors in our absence escalated to successful, elaborate escape attempts. She has dug under gates, jumped and climbed over 6-foot walls, and eaten through fences. When she is left for the day, she often patrols inside and then goes outside to wait. It’s possible that she could distracted enough to entertain her mind and reduce her anxiety (this was the main suggestion by the behavioralist we worked with), but we were unsuccessful in finding a solution. While roaming around inside the house she has on occasion pushed the door shut behind her in a room. When she “traps herself” in a room she becomes frantic; her anxiety has caused her to rip up carpet baseboards, scratch the door, and even try to turn the handle with her mouth. It has now become a regular occurrence that a neighbor calls after she has wondered to their front door. Since locking her in the house isn’t an option given her confinement issues, we are left without options. We have tried adopting a second dog for company but they ended up getting in a fight. (She has however stayed with 2 other female dogs at different occasions and had no problems after a proper introduction). She has been on Prozac for 2 months and also has been wearing a “thunder jacket”. We are unsure what, if anything, is helping, since the she is still often escaping. Hazel needs a home where someone will be with her every day and night or will take her along with them when they leave. (Another option may be getting her certified as a service or companion animal). In times where she will be left alone, the home and yard area must be vigilantly protected against her escape. We have been successful in the home by shutting the door to every room so she cannot trap herself. But she is able to jump and climb the 6-foot stucco walls surrounding our backyard. If we could rebuild our yard to contain her, or if we had a live- in family member, we would keep her in a heartbeat.

How will Hazel receive the Dogecoin?

The adopting family is the only party eligible to receive the Dogecoin. If you adopted the Hazel, thank you for providing a home and a loving family! Please begin the process of claiming Hazel's Dogecoin here.

For adoptions in which nokillnetwork.org was the matchmaker and we have contact information for both parties, we make every effort to contact the adopting family. For adoptions that were not facilitated by nokillnetwork.org, we still encourage the adopting family to claim the Dogecoin by submitting the necessary information.

The adopting family is the only party eligible to receive the Dogecoin. The adopting family will be required to provide proof of adoption between 4-6 weeks after adoption. This is to ensure that the home is a good match and Hazel was not returned. After we have verified the adoption, Hazel’s Dogecoin balance will be sent to the adopting family. Our staff provides instructions and help throughout this process.

What happens to unclaimed funds?

We want the Hazel’s balance to go to the adopting family as a way to say thank you for providing a loving home and to help with pet care expenses. In the unfortunate event we cannot contact them and verify the adoption, Hazel’s balance will remain in our general Dogecoin fund. This fund may be used to match contributions made to other adoptable pets, incentify other adoption-related actions, promote our mission, or support the operating expenses of nokillnetwork.org.
