About this Dog

Maya is a 2 year old Rhodesian mix. She's about 60 lbs, and she was surrendered twice to a shelter before I got her. The shelter paperwork says she was 'found in Mexico'. She's an anxious dog, and clearly has had a rough life. She loves tennis balls, and fetch, and catch, and chewing. She would love to chase squirrels and rabbits all day long if she could. She really would be happiest in the country, with lots of prey to hunt and chase (and no other dogs). She is dog-reactive, with both fear and aggression. Her level of fear suggests a trauma, and not just that she was insufficiently socialized as a young puppy. In the six months I've had her, she's improved a lot. She's on fluoxetine (prozac) now, which helps with the general anxiety, though doesn't eliminate it entirely. She's substantially less reactive with other dogs than when I first got her. We've been doing a lot of positive reinforcement training, and it has been working quite well. She responds extremely well to positive reinforcement, and she's gained in confidence a lot, even in six months. I'm not giving her up because I don't love her. She's a wonderful dog and I love her very much. I'm giving her up because I don't have the resources to provide her the dog-free spaces, like a big fenced yard to play, and chase and hunt, and fetch and all the things she needs to be a happy. Her progress with me shows she can be a very successful, sweet and loving companion, but in high stress situations she has now bitten several people hard enough to draw blood. She's also attacked or attempted to attack other dogs that have come running up to her. I know people don't want to give chances to dogs that have bitten people. But she isn't a vicious dog. She isn't a bad dog. She's an excellent dog, and I just can't provide her an environment that suits her needs, and keeps her happy and stress free. She doesn't deserve to die, especially because I feel like her behavior issues, serious as they are, are manageable, even resolvable, in the right environment, and with lots of patience. I can't provide that environment, but that doesn't mean that someone else couldn't. She deserves another chance. I hope I can find someone here who can give that to her.

Adopt Maya and Receive Dogecoin

Adopting a pet can be expensive, and we're trying to help by fundraising for each individual in need of adoption. After verifying the adoption, Maya's new family will receive the funds that their pet has raised. Dogecoin is digital currency that can be exchanged for cash, traded, or held as an investment (see the "What is Dogecoin" section below).

How will Maya receive the Dogecoin?

The adopting family is the only party eligible to receive the Dogecoin. If you adopted the Maya, thank you for providing a home and a loving family! Please begin the process of claiming Maya's Dogecoin here.

For adoptions in which nokillnetwork.org was the matchmaker and we have contact information for both parties, we make every effort to contact the adopting family. For adoptions that were not facilitated by nokillnetwork.org, we still encourage the adopting family to claim the Dogecoin by submitting the necessary information.

The adopting family is the only party eligible to receive the Dogecoin. The adopting family will be required to provide proof of adoption between 4-6 weeks after adoption. This is to ensure that the home is a good match and Maya was not returned. After we have verified the adoption, Maya’s Dogecoin balance will be sent to the adopting family. Our staff provides instructions and help throughout this process.

What happens to unclaimed funds?

We want the Maya’s balance to go to the adopting family as a way to say thank you for providing a loving home and to help with pet care expenses. In the unfortunate event we cannot contact them and verify the adoption, Maya’s balance will remain in our general Dogecoin fund. This fund may be used to match contributions made to other adoptable pets, incentify other adoption-related actions, promote our mission, or support the operating expenses of nokillnetwork.org. If you would like to make a direct contribution to nokillnetwork.org to help us help other pets in need, you can go here. We appreciate your generosity and help!
