About this Dog

Overview of Odin: Odin is approximately 6 years old. He weighs around 25-30 pounds. He is definitely Aussie or mini-Aussie, but not pure bred. He even has the Aussie "wiggle butt" for which they are notorious. He came to us with very little information and I am sorry to say that he has just turned out to be more than I can handle. My daughter is in a dog club and worked with him on showmanship and obedience, and he did fairly well, so he is reasonably trainable. He has been living with two other dogs and several cats and has no issues getting along with other animals. He has also lived around a bird and bunnies and never paid them any mind. He also never seemed bothered by the other dogs in his dog club. He is generally quiet and keeps to himself a lot. He seems to have been through something difficult, but we have no idea what that was. He is sweet, but just has not been a great fit in our home. We are hoping the right person will find him. If you think you could be that person, please keep reading. Where Odin has challenged us: Odin has some skin issues. Nothing intolerable, but he scratches the hair off of his hind end a lot. We worked with the people in our dog club, which includes a veterinarian, to alleviate his skin irritation, but have never completely solved the problem. Medications, changes in diet, natural remedies, and special shampoos or other topical treatments help, but then it always comes back to some degree. It may be allergies, but we have never had him properly tested - he has never been sick from it, just irritated. Otherwise, he is up-to-date on all shots and is healthy and active. Odin probably won't like whatever dominant male is in your home. We were told when we took him in that "he doesn't like men".... that's it. No explanation really, just that. So, we tried him out, and he was fine at first, but slowly he began to show aggression towards my husband. Not vicious aggression, but he definitely treats my husband in a much more hostile way than he does others. My husband has adapted routines to try and diminish confrontation with Odin as much as possible, but it still persists. Odin has never actually harmed my husband, but he continues to behave this way towards him no matter what we do. He nips at his legs as he is walking down the hallway to let him outside and such. The dog has left a few small bruises on his calves and snagged a few pairs of pants, but never broken skin or anything like that - he's not a big dog, so the result is always very minimal. We have no idea why he does this. He causes no real harm, but it is frustrating and nerve-wracking on a daily basis - partly because he howls at him whenever he does this. (Odin has more of a small howl than a bark, and he rarely barks/howls - he is generally pretty quiet) An interesting note: my husband can sit on the couch and call the dog to him and Odin will sit right on his lap and let my husband pet him, but when he is up moving about, Odin goes right back to his aggressive approach towards him. Again, we have no idea why, because my husband has really, really tried, with tremendous patience, to befriend this dog, but it has gotten him nowhere and is very frustrating for all of us. Full, consistent housebreaking of Odin has been an issue. He did fine at first, but started having accidents, which has been a back-and-forth process during his stay with us. We have other dogs that we have never needed to contain for this reason, so it is a big hassle trying to separate Odin in that way. He likes to be upstairs at our house, and my health makes me chasing him up and down stairs to contain him when I need to very taxing on me (I am his primary caretaker who is home with him the majority of the time). He is very sensitive and will yelp and whine if I try to pick him up or take him by the collar, which upsets me, because I know I'm not hurting him but he makes me feel like I am.... so that just adds to the stress of it all. He now seems to be " marking" my house and damaging 100-year old original woodwork, and I am beside myself over it. He rarely goes even 2-hours without going outside, so I'm at my wits end over it. Plus, Odin really is not fond of being outside for any longer than absolutely necessary - he is jumping all over the back door crying to get back inside if he is out more than ten minutes (less if the weather isn't great). Our other dogs love being outside in any halfway decent weather. Bottom line is, Odin just has not adapted/acclamated to our home very well at all. He is meek and quiet, with a sweet little face and general demeanor, but he is not very social at all and (for all the reasons explained above) just has not managed to fit in with our family as a whole or our lifestyle. It is very disheartening because, like I said, he has another side to him that is sweet and meek, and I know he wants love and attention, and gets that as much as our other pets most days, but he makes it very difficult to connect to him. I'm not sure what this dog went through before he ended up with us, but I believe that the right person and place for him is out there. Please ask me whatever you need to about Odin. I'm hoping to give his next owner far more insight into him than we were given so that they can start out on the right foot with him and succeed where we feel like we have failed. Thank you for taking time to read about Odin.
