About this Dog
Meet Ranger! This handsome boy lived outside roaming farmland his whole life, and when his owner died, he was confined to a 10' x 20' pen. Since being rescued from that life, he has been vetted, neutered, groomed, and living as an indoor dog, adjusting to a new life in the suburbs. Ranger's foster family includes another Aussie and a Husky pup who are showing him the ropes, and his foster parents, Hannah and Brandon. We've discovered that he still has a lot of puppy in him; he's curious, playful, loves squeaky toys, and can play fetch all day. Ranger is still shy around new people and needs time to warm up and trust. He finds comfort as part of a pack, and will ONLY be placed in a home with other dogs. He is best paired with a social, confident dog who can guide his behavior, because he is more engaging with people when he has a dog companion. He follows the other dog's lead and loves to play with his foster pup siblings. He can be goofy and will give them kisses, and has never been aggressive. He's getting better with kibble too. Initially, he rejected dog food because he was used to eating table scraps, but now he's eating well and is very attentive when treats are introduced. He sleeps in the dog bed right next to the other dogs and sleeps well through the night. His foster parents are home during the day, and doing regular potty breaks to reinforce good potty habits. They recently introduced the crate, and have kept the door open to give him time to acclimate. Ranger made the the trip to N. VA on 5/30 and has acclimated well to his foster home. His foster mom, Beth, shares regular updates: 6/2 - Ranger has only been here a few days and has calmed down, but is still hesitant about walking around the house, and is fearful of wood floors. He likes the couch, it's his favorite spot and he likes to cuddle with me and is warming up to Joe. He loves to give sporadic kisses and is sweet and cuddly. We did a few drills with him this morning, hand feeding him dog food mixed with pieces of cheese. He takes treats well and can sit. He is still learning his name, and s shy at having his collar grabbed, but we know a drill we can do to work with him on that. He loves to play fetch and be in the yard, and he slept through the night in his crate. No accidents yet but we are taking him out every three hours. 6/4 Quick update, Ranger is getting better all the time. I've been walking him back and forth in the hallways to get him used to walking on the wood floors. Jumping off the couch is still a struggle but we're getting there. I've been hand feeding him and drilling him on sit, his name, and doing collar grabs and rewards. He's eating dog food (when interspersed with cheese). We are now letting him off the leash in the yard while we are around and watching him, and he's started coming back to us. He and Izzy are getting along but Izzy is still being a brat and stealing any toys we give him ;) she is getting better too. He loves the couch and cuddled with Joe last night on it. Still no accidents and he has been good about going out in the yard. Joe took Ranger out for a walk today in the neighborhood, and he did well!! He's warming up to being on leash. 6/10 - We've been taking Ranger and Izzy on long walks, he loves them, and loves running around in the yard with Izzy. He's such a happy dog! He's coming to his name now, sitting whenever we ask him to, and is comfortable being in the house (jumping up and off the couch, walking around on wood floors, getting used to loud noises). He's adjusting well to being a couch potato with Izzy and naps quietly by her while I'm working. He continues to sleep through the night in his crate and hasn't had an accident. Overall, he's a sweetheart to have around. 6/22 - Over the weekend we had some people over for a social distancing bbq. They brought 2 dogs and a puppy, so Ranger was playing with Izzy, 2 new dogs, and putting up with a puppy. He did great with them, and was really excited to run around the yard with them. He would cautiously go up to people who were sitting down, which is a big improvement for him. He still hasn’t had an accident and seems to be housebroken. We let him sleep outside of the crate last night and he did great, but will still go in the crate when he wants to take a nap or hideout during a thunderstorm. I found him and Izzy cuddling in the same crate. During one of the storms to comfort one another :) On walks, he has the confidence to pull now, so we are working with him on that. He is still afraid of big dump trucks when they go by, but does well with cars and general noises. He still prefers the quieter streets. NOTE: Ranger is very connected to his foster parents and does well meeting new dogs that vary in size, age, and energy level. He is still shy meeting new people, and will be reserved at a meetup. He needs an adotper who understands that, and is ready to give him to settle in.
