About this Dog
NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS! Meet Peanut (aka Princess in her former life). This adorable little Poodle mix was rescued by a former WDR adopter, Catherine, who is also a nurse with a very caring nature. Catherine worked with Peanut's prior owner and would regularly hear her discuss the challenges she was having with her dog. Catherine learned that her co-worker was keeping Peanut crated in the garage 10+ hours a day without breaks. Peanut would naturally have accidents in her crate and would sit in her urine all day long. She was living neglected and ostracised in a garage because her family was not able to care for her properly. And with the COVID outbreak, the owner, also a nurse, was working longer hours and more shifts. Catherine offered to take the dog to help her with some basic training. When she picked Peanut up, she was shocked by her condition. Her fur was matted, and her feet were urine-soaked. She also discovered that she was not spayed. Thankfully, Catherine was able to convince Peanut's owner to surrender her, and she reached out to Worthy Dog to find her a great home. Peanut has now been groomed, vetted, and has been in her foster home for a few weeks living as an only dog. She has a retired foster mom who is home during the day, and she gets regular potty breaks, walks, and plenty of playtime in the yard. Her foster mom, Tonia, describes her as "a total joy" and shared this udpate: "Peanut is very intelligent and picks up things quickly. She enjoys rides in the car, walks in the neighborhood, and belly rubs are some of her favorite things. She is almost housebroken, having 1-2 accidents a week. She loves to meet new people, gets along with cats and other small dogs, but is somewhat afraid of large dogs and will take time to warm up to them. Children are ok as long as they're supervised around her. She has a tendency to nip if she is startled, but it takes quite a bit to startle her. Peanut has a moderate energy level. She is confident around people and very snuggly. She will greet new people with curiosity, politely asking for an ear scratch or belly rub. She can keep herself occupied playing with her toys or looking out the window. She knows 'sit,' 'stay,' 'no,' 'potty,' comes when called, listens well while off leash (as long as there are no squirrels or birds to chase), and sleeps soundly through the night with no issues. I haven't crated her since she's been here, although the crate is available to her if she wants it. So far, she doesn't want it. Peanut will do well in a variety of situations. She doesn't need a lot of room, as long as she gets out several times a day for potty breaks and exercise. Another small, active dog or cat would be good for her, but she would also be fine as an only dog. She is very intelligent and would do best in an environment where she gets lots of attention and socialization. She's happiest when she's around her people. Small children would probably not be ideal since she has been known to nip. She has no food aggression, is not a chewer, and is very well behaved. I've left her alone with the run of the house for a couple of hours with no problems. This is a great dog. She's easy, no complaining, no drama, just happy to be by your side."
