About this Dog
Meet Quincy! This sweet boy is a mutt-mix: Foxhound, Lab, and Terrier all combined into one handsome package. Quincy is a medium-energy dog who is very connected to his person and motivated to please. He needs a confident owner with some large-breed dog experience to lead him and give him structure and boundaries, as well as lots of love and attention. He responds well to verbal commands and can easily be redirected. He will make a great only-dog or be best paired with a calm, confident dog he can learn from and mirror their behavior. Quincy would be an excellent fit for active empty nesters, or a single person looking for a loyal companion to be their sidekick. He does best in a calm home with a consistent routine. Quincy was adopted last year by a couple who had him for about five months. Before he was adopted, Worthy Dog had him in foster care and saw Quincy thrive in numerous settings. He was fostered with another dog and a cat, and also lived as an only-dog, doing well in both situations. We saw a social pup who loved car rides and going on social outings and enjoyed visits to local parks and vineyards. He was adopted by first-time dog owners and was anxious with them from the beginning. They lived in a highrise condo and had ongoing construction next door that probably did not help him feel calm or safe in his new home. He started showing some reactivity on leash around other dogs and was anxious greeting visitors, which was very different from the dog we knew. While Quincy's adopters loved him very much, they were not well equipped to manage him. He was returned to the rescue, and we did a multi-week board/train with our go-to trainer, Alexa, so that she could assess him and work on his leash skills, crate training, and doggy socialization. She monitored his play with other dogs and paired him with moderate energy dogs who don't get over-excited, and he did great playing as part of a pack. She helped him transition to his foster home, where he's done very well. Quincy has been fostered for the past few months in a calm, empty-nester home with a large chocolate Lab named Moose. He loves and respects his foster parents, and has excellent house manners - housetrained and crate trained. He was a little barky in his crate at first, but responded quickly to a firm "no" or a quick squirt of water. His leash skills have really improved, and he uses a training collar to help him stay focused as he passes other dogs. Alexa worked with him to address some behaviors he picked up over the past few months. He's a good boy; he just needs an owner who is in charge and not too passive to show him right from wrong. Because he seemed more anxious in a condo, a home with a fenced yard is preferred. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 5/7/20 His foster mom, Cindy, really enjoys his company and shared this update: "Quincy is doing great! I walk him and Moose a couple times daily, and have given him more freedom in the house. We started off with more rules and boundaries, but as he acclimated, I took the gates down and he does well with free roam. I also let him sleep in our room now vs. the crate. I have a dog bed he sleeps on and he loves it. He sleeps soundly all night, no issues. He really loves his people, and is very connected to my husband and I. I think he really needs a family who has a flexible schedule and has some time to spend with him. I do not see him enjoying being home alone everyday with someone working long hours. He was comfortable with us from the start, but Alexa said he needs a person who guides him on what to do and not to do. He minds great, and needs consistency. I am consistent with him and predictable, and he respects me. Quincy is respectful and playful with Moose. I would describe his personality as happy - he wags his whole butt when he's excited. He minds very well and walks on leash well. He notices other dogs, but would rather just enjoy the walk." Best fit for Quincy Only dog or paired with a moderate energy, calm dog Calm/quiet home environment with fenced yard - Not a city or condo dog Empty Nesters, Single Owner, or family with older kids Large breed dog experience Flexible schedule if only dog home Dogs react and respond to their handler and the energy in the home, so behavior can vary from family to family. We know the right home for every dog is out there, and we're committed to finding the perfect match for Quincy. He's flourishing in his foster home, but is ready to start his new life. NOTE: Quincy does have fear/anxiety going to the vet and is reactive. He is muzzle trained, so for the vet, he will need to use a muzzle and will need positive meetings and introductions to the vet office to get more comfortable.
