I am in the process of starting a no-kill shelter. We are receiving some funding through donations. But we are going to be very large hopefully very soon. We have interest in land being donated to us to build a nice facility with room to grow. Turning away animals is not an option by any means, whether it be dogs, cats, horses or another type of domestic animal. While I have personally saved wild animals previously raccoons and a few abandoned bob-cats, there will probably be little of that going on.
The land we are possibly obtaining through donation is going to be roughly 50+ acres if everything goes as planned.
The primary question I had is do we need any kind of permits or anything to shelter animals in large quantities? We live in Georgia and it is farm country but I wouldn't want to get all of the funds together to build the facility and have it stopped halfway through to obtain permits.
While here in Georgia I know we can own as many animals as we would care too. In a sheltering environment I do not know if there are any laws or conditions that have to be met.
Can anyone give me some information about this?
I can be reached through the forum or if you are just out and about this weekend and would like to contact me:
For all of those concerned, we will be accepting Aggressive dogs. Unfortunately around here we have a lot of "Bait Dogs" that are muzzled and used to train other dogs to fight. I have participated in saving some of these dogs personally before I and my boss have taken over this foundation. I know there are some different views out there on aggressive dogs being in the shelter. All I can say is while they are here they will be kept on a separate area of the ranch and of course away from each other. Hopefully through hard work and dedication they can be brought into a more social environment but if not they will remain with us until they are called to a better place.
