My Mother which is 74 years old has taken in strays for as long as I can remember. She has put up many fenced in sections in her yard and has each dog a make-shift house. As of now she has 8 in the backyard, 3 in the front yard and 4 that hang around the carport that have been put out at her house. She fell two years ago and broke her hip. Since then she has had a heart attack, congestive heart failure, a stroke and has just gotten out of the hospital with a clot between her lung and heart. She is having someone else feed the dogs right now but she cannot even go in the yard anymore. I am 6 hours away from her and want to move her to Florida so I can take care of her. She is scared to death to put ads in the paper because she thinks they will end up being used by dog fighters. Please, please if anyone has suggestions. There are no no-kill shelters close by. She lives in southern Georgia.
You can put ads in the paper, but have adoption applications and contracts ready, charge a fee (this will weed out lots of bad people) and find someone to do home checks. A local rescue might be able to help you out with the home checks and even provide a generic application for you to use.
Make sure there are pictures of the dogs and a bio of the dog, not the situation of your mom.
You can also take that information and start sending it to rescues.
Has anyone had any luck with Craigslist for finding good homes? I've sold many things on there but haven't ever had to surrender a pet but thought I'd throw it out there as a suggestion just in case...
