Adoptable Pets in Oklahoma

Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?

No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

These are two of the most compassionate women I know. Their hearts are HUGE and they dedicate their lives to saving those that don’t have a voice. I’ve adopted multiple dogs from them, including 3 seniors that easily would have been given up on if not for OKSAD! Thank you ladies! You are so loved & appreciated!

OK Save a Dog brought our sweet puppy into our lives just when we needed her. We filled out an application to adopt with great questions to make sure we could properly care for and love our new baby. The foster mom contacted us immediately and I could tell she loved our puppy as her own. When we picked her up I could tell she had been well loved and would be missed but also that they had made sure we would be the right fit for her. I can’t thank them enough for the amazing things that they do!

Kim is the most compassionate animal lover I have ever known. She is a wealth of information for any who need advice on an issue they may have with a dog. She will help a dog that’s not super adoptable and she will love and nurture it until the right family comes along.

They microchip every dog and their contact info remains on every chip as secondary contact in case the owner didn’t update a new address or phone number and they will go pick up one of theirs then try and locate new contact info for the adopter.

She starts on vaccinations immediately. Her place is as clean as they come. I’ve been by unannounced and never have I seen any filth, cages or illness. Kim is OCD and constantly scooping poop, filling food bowls and changing out water. Sunshine and Kim are wonderful with dogs even those who are traumatized.

It is stated very clearly in their contracts that if an adopted animal must be rehomed, to call them and return the animal to OKSAD.
5 posted by KellyJacksonDeJager, on 2018-02-06 02:44:52
They do a fantastic job of getting to know the dogs and have excellent matching skills to adopters. They do what’s best for the dog. Some dogs require a furry companion, some have separation anxiety, some are nervous around kids. Questions are asked and references checked to help make the adoption a successful one for the dog and the family.

They’ve saved hundreds from the gas chamber and worse. They’ve even taken in ones they know will be difficult to place and those with a list of Vet work needed. They don’t limit help to only cute little fluffy puppies like some rescues do.

I have known Kim Bowers (founder) and Sunshine Bush since 2011. They are in it for the dogs and the dogs alone. Yes, they have a large number of dogs, they are a RESCUE. They vet check, vaccinate, spay/neuter, every single dog that comes into their rescue. I have been to the rescue many times as a volunteer and a foster. The rescue and their home has been nothing but the best. The dogs are well cared for, each and every one. I have three dogs i have personally adopted from their rescue and family members and friends have adopted from them as well.

We adopted a mini-schnauzer from them in 2011, and she is the sweetest dog we’ve ever had. I wish I could rate NO stars! We bought a mini Doxie there. We were told she was healthy and was 5 years old. They were so wrong! Took her to the vet, she was 10 years old, AND had tumors in her head, as well as congestive heart failure! After over $1300 in medical bills, she had to be put to sleep. Don't get a dog at this place!

My husband and I work in construction and for the past week my husband, who was working in Wynnewood on N JOY HOMES LOT, and he told me about this sweet dog that has been hanging around. He sent me a photo (bc he knows me.. I can't leave an animal out on the streets alone) and I went there (to N Joy Homes) the next day to see if he was still there. We unloaded our tools and went around looking for him ( in the area) and to my wonderful surprise he was! He was playing with the neighborhood dogs. I asked the owner about how long he had been around (he said 3wks) messing with his dogs trying to make friends and get a bite to eat, but sadly he wasn't wanted out there.... It has been pretty rough for him. Getting attacked by other dogs... and he had been sprayed by a skunk. So I took him under my wing. I gave him food and water until I got off of work... and took him home, gave him a (lol much need) bath and now I have him here at home. I really feel he has someone looking for him out there... because he's soo soo sweet. Please IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR HIM LET ME KNOW. I'M SURE HE'S MISSING HIS HOME. HE CRIES AND LOOKS AROUND DESPERATELY... THEN PUTS HIS HEAD DOWN. I hope to make him as comfortable as can be. With lots of love.

We adopted Amos from OK Save a Dog in April of 2014. It was a battle, but it was clear to me that Kim really cares about the homes that her dogs go to and the likely hood that the home will be a forever home. Put in the effort, show that you care and are willing to be the right family for the dog that you are interested in. If you aren't approved, take it as constructive criticism to revaluate your home/family for the type of dog you want to adopt. These women are doing amazing work to protect and care for so many animals that are just thrown away. So proud to support them in their mission!

We adopted Elly in 09 from OK Save a Dog. Kim and Sun are tireless, working constantly trying to save as many unwanted dogs as they possibly can, and exist on donations and a handful of volunteers. When I was able, I fostered a few and volunteered at some adoption events and got to know Sunshine. She is a very caring individual, goes out of her way, sometimes risking her own life to save these animals. I have never met 2 women so dedicated to helping homeless, badly injured or abused animals. Two women run the entire rescue, one from their home. They don’t get time off. From the moment they wake up to the time their heads hit the pillow they’re working. Hard work. Cleaning, giving medication, scooping poop, transporting dogs from the pound, to the vet, or to an event, replying to emails, looking at applications, loving on dogs, feeding, cleaning up more poop… The dogs get the joy of living on acres of land versus a tiny kennel while they await their forever home. Lots of dogs cower and lose themselves while locked in a tiny cage at a shelter. Their rescues enjoy freedom, thank goodness! They are two of the most selfless people I’ve ever met with the biggest hearts for animals.

I have 3 dogs from OK Save A Dog Society, I mostly worked with Sunshine, who is wonderful to work with. I find her to be honest, caring, and truly wanting the best for each and every one of the dogs adopted. My dogs, Tracy, McQueen, and Brittney were healthy, well cared for, and social when I adopted them. Sunshine advised me of any concerns or health issues (Tracy had bad teeth, they are fine now) and was available to contact if I had any questions. Kim and Sunshine put their heart and souls into the care and well being. P.S. I have know Sunshine for over 15 years and have never known her to commit a crime, ever....

1. Feral Cat TNR Program

Many communities are embracing Trap, Neuter, Release programs (TNR) to improve animal welfare, reduce death rates, and meet obligations to public welfare.

2. High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

Low cost, high volume spay/neuter will quickly lead to fewer animals entering the shelter system, allowing more resources to be allocated toward saving lives.

3. Rescue Groups

An adoption or transfer to a rescue group frees up scarce cage and kennel space, reduces expenses for feeding, cleaning, killing, and improves a community's rate of lifesaving. In an environment of millions of dogs and cats killed in shelters annually, rare is the circumstance in which a rescue group should be denied an animal.

4. Foster Care

Volunteer foster care is crucial to No Kill. Without it, saving lives is compromised. It is a low cost, and often no cost, way of increasing a shelter's capacity, improving public relations, increasing a shelter's public image, rehabilitating sick and injured or behaviorally challenged animals, and saving lives.

5. Comprehensive Adoption Programs

Adoptions are vital to an agency's lifesaving mission. The quantity and quality of shelter adoptions is in shelter management's hands, making lifesaving a direct function of shelter policies and practice. In fact, studies show people get their animals from shelters only 20% of the time. If shelters better promoted their animals and had adoption programs responsive to the needs of the community, including public access hours for working people, offsite adoptions, adoption incentives, and effective marketing, they could increase the number of homes available and replace killing with adoptions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, shelters can adopt their way out of killing.

6. Pet Retention

While some of the reasons animals are surrendered to shelters are unavoidable, others can be prevented-but only if shelters are willing to work with people to help them solve their problems. Saving animals requires communities to develop innovative strategies for keeping people and their companion animals together. And the more a community sees its shelters as a place to turn for advice and assistance, the easier this job will be.

7. Medical and Behavior Programs

In order to meet its commitment to a lifesaving guarantee for all savable animals, shelters need to keep animals happy and healthy and keep animals moving through the system. To do this, shelters must put in place comprehensive vaccination, handling, cleaning, socialization, and care policies before animals get sick and rehabilitative efforts for those who come in sick, injured, unweaned, or traumatized.

8. Public Relations/Community Involvement

Increasing adoptions, maximizing donations, recruiting volunteers and partnering with community agencies comes down to one thing: increasing the shelter's exposure. And that means consistent marketing and public relations. Public relations and marketing are the foundation of all a shelter's activities and their success. To do all these things well, the shelter must be in the public eye.

9. Volunteers

Volunteers are a dedicated "army of compassion" and the backbone of a successful No Kill effort. There is never enough staff, never enough dollars to hire more staff, and always more needs than paid human resources. That is where volunteers come in and make the difference between success and failure and, for the animals, life and death.

10. Proactive Redemptions

One of the most overlooked areas for reducing killing in animal control shelters are lost animal reclaims. Sadly, besides having pet owners fill out a lost pet report, very little effort is made in this area of shelter operations. This is unfortunate because doing so-primarily shifting from passive to a more proactive approach-has proven to have a significant impact on lifesaving and allow shelters to return a large percentage of lost animals to their families.

11. A Compassionate Director

The final element of the No Kill equation is the most important of all, without which all other elements are thwarted-a hard working, compassionate animal control or shelter director not content to regurgitate tired cliches or hide behind the myth of "too many animals, not enough homes." Unfortunately, this one is also oftentimes the hardest one to demand and find.
