Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

Certain shelter animals will benefit from or have a special need that require them to temporarily stay in a private home rather than at the Shelter. Our foster families lovingly care for these animals as if they were their own, while the Shelter covers all related expenses. Please contact us for more information on becoming a Foster Family.

If your pet has gone missing, we encourage you to contact your town's Animal Control department first. In addition, you may provide the Shelter with a complete description of the animal, along with your contact information to (781) 544-4533. We keep a large bulletin board of current missing pet records and we are sometimes able to reunite missing pets with owners.

Loretta's Fund is a Financial Assistance Program that allows for affordable and accessible spay and neuter services. It has been established in memory of one of the Friends of the Scituate Shelter's founders, Loretta Darian in an effort to reduce pet over-population. The program is available for qualified Scituate residents.
