Shelters are often inundated with pet surrenders, and do not want to provide a simple outlet that takes away the obligation of responsible pet ownership. Therefore, they would prefer that people try hard to find a solution before resorting to surrendering their pet to a shelter. If you must find a new home for a pet, please try posting to our adoption portal before placing the burden on the shelter. Direct adoptions work well and allow everyone to share in the accountability of their community!
No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

We are always looking for responsible, dedicated and compassionate people to assist us in providing the highest level of care to the animals in our shelter. We strive to work together in a safe environment as a family at Safe Haven to help out all of our friends with paws.

Safe Haven is always interested in meeting with people who might be interested in opening their home to an animal in need by becoming a foster caregiver. Foster caregivers not only provide care and socialization to the animals in our shelter, they also help by increasing the number of animals we can provide services to without taking up shelter space.
If you think you would be interested in becoming a foster care provider, please download our foster home application http://www.wesavepets.com/info/file?file=s982m2352.pdf and let's explore the possibilities of how you can best put your talents as a dedicated animal lover to use for lost, abandoned and unwanted pets in Iowa County.

I am a volunteer with Safe Haven and I just wanted to let you know that our phone number is now 319-622-7387. The number change was a result of our relocating our animals to 2783 Route 6 Trail, South Amana, Ia. Mailing address remains the same as does our email address: [email protected] .
Thank you
